My Favorite Camera Yet
on May 14, 2011
Posted by: Bird Photographer

Experience: a prize-winning bird photographer for ten years, using the 7D for over a year.
Given that I want the 1.6 crop factor for bird photography, this is, head and shoulders, the best camera I have used yet. Furthermore, the 1920x1080 video is perfect for use in slideshows, providing truly excellent video. The fast frame rate coupled with fast shutter speeds provides crystal clear flight shots. I love my 7D! My wife loves hers!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable
I would recommend this to a friend!

It's not a point and shoot SLR

Ok guys, I've finally got it last week and since then I was playing with my new toy as a five year old. It is a camera designed for photographers, meaning there are no "useless" features, and no "hassle" around things, Everything is simple to find, simple to operate and to operate, however, it is not a toy camera. In my review I will refer to some issues that I've read about that concerned me when I was planning to buy this camera:
Autofocus, in the beginning I was a bit surprised that I didn't get the sharpness that I wanted, but then realized that once you have 19 points of AF, letting them control the picture will soon lead you to disasters. You need to control the AFin order to get what you want, once I've set the points myself, and started to pay attention to where the AF is focusing, pictures are bright clear (up to the hairs in the nose which can cause you a domestic problem). Another issue, it's a 18MP sensor, any hand shake will be visible, my 6.3MP digital rebel is very forgiving in this matter, the 7D is not. Another issue is lenses, unfortunately, little "errors" in the lens is more visible in 18MP image than in 6.3MP image, so are light reflections between the filter and the lens.
Another issue I've read about is focus in low light, that is tricky, cause going up to ISO 12500 means you can take pictures in almost darkness, however in the dark, it's not easy to focus cause you DON'T SEE much. But as far as I tried, it did focus quite well (again, master the focus, don't let it master you).
Anyone having EOS before will find it very intuitive, simple to use and after a short learning curve, it's also easy to handle, a bit heavier than the entry level cameras, but that can be expected and to some degree welcomed, I like to FEEL the camera in my hand.
The grip is a wonderful addition (highly recommended), especially with the 6 AA pack, allowing you to have a relative simple and available backup in the case you are away from electricity (vacations, holly-days or in the wild)
And the sound it makes when shooting, the mirror going up and down, what can I say, there are some features that come as a bonus.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Canon 7D... I like it!!

I have owned the Canon 20D, 30D and now the 7D. No comparison the 7D is way ahead. The features and ease of use and image quality is top notch. Unless you are going for full frame, like the 5D Mk II this is the camera. Extremely fine low light focusing and image quality. The HD video is crisp and clean and easy to use. I am more than satisfied with the 7 D.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Extremely Disappointed
on April 27, 2011

I'm simply baffled at the poor quality of images this camera produces, given the promotional hype I've seen distributed about it. The noise at high ISO was supposed to be minimal--it's not; white balance disappoints 90% of the time, and in too many instances, tack sharp focus occurs only after post-production adjustments. I'm seriously thinking of jumping ship.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Solid Operation
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy, poor white balance, focus off on moving subjects
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Why buy anything else

Bang for your buck, stop here. Great photos and the 7D is capable of doing way more than I can do as a photographer. I moved up from the 40D and use a variety of lenses. However, most of my stuff is taken using a F2.8/120-300 lens as I shoot mainly fast paced athletics.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, excellent image quality, Solid Operation

A Sports Photographer's Dream
on April 2, 2011

This body is nearly perfect for my needs. I take photos of Indoor Dog Sports as a Semi-Pro Photographer for my team. This body doesn't fall short in any areas that I can think of besides the fragility of some parts. But with electronics, this is a given. You have to be realistic.
Taking photos here is one of the most demanding locations you could shoot. High and low operating temperatures, poor Light, need of extreme shutter speeds, high frame rates, and high ISO levels. Usually, to get a decently lit frame with little to no blur, you need at LEAST 1/4000 shutter speed and 2000 ISO. Any with this body, it was SO easy to pull of some of the shots I had extreme trouble with compared to some of the less expensive models. The frames had very little grain and were extremely easy to clean up in Photoshop afterwards.
The only gripe I could ever have with mine was that the menu was a little odd to use since the organization is a little weird. But Canon managed to get around that by giving you your own personal menu that you can fill up with whatever you need and use a lot! So say you use several different flashes on one body for different locations. With this menu, it takes 2 clicks the get into your flash set up! Lovely.
The reason why it didn't get 5 perfect stars: The fact that the CF Card Reader's pins bent through normal use. I've never even heard of this happening! It's still under warranty, but I don't know if Canon will fix it under it.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, high frame rate
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

Simply Superb

This camera is just awesome for video. The dynamic range in the highlights could have been better. Also audio controls are much needed. Nothing beats the 7D in ergonomics.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: noisy, Heavy/Bulky
