My wife and I bought this lens while on vacation in Wyoming. Out of the box and straight to work, we have no regrets for our spur of the moment purchase. Not only does it help take amazing photos, but it is an impressive piece mounted on our EOS. I highly recommend any experienced or unexperienced photographer purchase this lens.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, excellent all around
I would recommend this to a friend!

Out of all my lenses this is my best and favorite. I wish all my other L series had IS, but I can't imagine this one without it. It is incredible. I use it mainly for concerts capturing performers onstage from across the concert hall. Zoom is great for when I get to walk around during rehearsals, gives me more freedom with image composition. Lens is great for outdoor portraits, blurs backgournd perfectly. Price is up there, but honestly worth every penny. Even though it is not my all around lens, it would be the last lens to go if I had to get rid of any lenses.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, great image stablization

Worth every penny

When I first purchased my 40D, I also ordered a less expensive, non IS, slower, lens than this one.
After one year, I bit the bullet and ordered this lens.
The difference is phenomenal.
Best money I ever spent.
Oddly enough, I consider the weight to be a positive.
The added mass does tend to dampen shake.
I added a low cost pistol grip to the tripod mount. Love it.
Pros: Superior build quality, great for low-light shots

Favorite if not for the weight

I've had this lens almost a year now and I simply love it. It was purchased for outdoor use on a trip to Alaska but I have since found that it is fabulous for almost any use especially indoors with poor lighting. I'm only an amateur photographer but this lens is well worth having even if you are not a professional. I used this lens to photograph a wedding for a friend as a favor and the results were stunning. You simply cannot go wrong with this lens.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality
Cons: heavy

Incredible lens. Excellent quality and good performance.
I wish that Canon could redesign AF/MF switch: it's easy by accident to turn it to MF mode.
Lens is costly.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus

Strong build quality!

This lens is built well, takes abuse and mishaps but is heavy (3.3 pounds). I dont like zooms, but as they go, this is my favorite. A real workhouse, with great autofocus speed and reliability and superior IS. Good contrast and color, falloff in corners wide open though, pretty sharp (not quite equal to primes), and extraordinarily versatile. Well loved by opera shooters, nature lovers and sports shooters. I try to fault this lens, but other than price and weight, it is a legendary piece of glass and that does too many things well to not be in every Canon photographers bag. A reliable and superior performing workhorse that doesnt need to be babied!
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, image stabilization, reliable, smooth manual focus, sharp for a zoom
Cons: weight
I would recommend this to a friend!
