I own this lens for a couple of years now and it amazes me every time i use it. Build like a tank, superb analysis, excellent sharpness and contrast, super fast autofocus... The Image Stabilizer is a life saver! The only downside is the weight but the quality is amazing!!!
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, image stabilizer is a life saver

You Get What You Pay For

Bought this lens for an African Safari 3 years ago, thinking I would use it for that trip and then re-sell it. Wrong. Since then there has hardly been a day when this lens wasn't hanging off one or another of my bodies. The only possible criticism I can imagine anyone levelling at this unit is that it does have some weight to it, but I'm now unwilling to go anywhere without it. When travelling in remote locations with tight luggage allowances I'm quite happy to leave all my clothes home to bring this lens and a 300 f2.8L. There is a lot of buzz about the new II version (which I admit I've never tried) but I can't imagine any piece of equipment being better suited to its purpose than this lens. It is incredibly rugged and weatherproof (trust me on this one, you can't hurt this thing) and most importantly produces a crisp, vibrant image every single time. Resolution is simply terrific, even with an extender, and the stabilizer is surprisingly effective. You can consider travelling withpout a tripod and still bring back high-quality images more often than not. When it has been impossible to bring a 300 2.8 I have been able to use this with a 1.4 extender with surprisingly little trade off, and from me that's high praise since I think the 300 2.8 is the finest lens of any size I've ever used.
When you take the tough build, fantastic resolution, image stabilizer, and add to all that the zoom range that covers the most-often required focal lengths, you get a lens that I can't imagine any Canon shooter doing without, regardless of the cost.
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, covers the most used focal lengths

One of the best lenses

Pros: IS, aperture, build quality (with seals), image quality, et, etc.
I bought this about a year ago and its the best lens in my kit. Currently it have it on an APS-C body but once I get my 5D Mark II I'm looking forward even more to using it. For people concerned about the weight, it is heavy, but IS during the day and a good mono-pod for darker shots should do the trick. If you want awesome coverage and awesome photos this is the lens for you. My only (non)real gripe is I wish it were 72mm in stead of 77mm so I wouldn't have to buy new filters, but that's just me being cheap.

The BEST of the BEST!

After a year of using this lens I can not say enough about it. Sports, weddings, Portraits, and landscapes are a breeze with this lense. Low light is no problem, and the IS works Great! The blur is soft and easy to control. I just wish canon would make a few more lenses of this quality (17- 55) maybe. With a canon 50D crop factor (1.6) and a 1.4x, this combination is fantastic for sports. Photos are nothing less than Perfect! Yes it is a little heavy, But it is a lot of lens. When in doubt, pull it out.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus

Truly an awesome lens! Photos are totally tack sharp. Great for portraits, sports, and wildlife. Works together nicely with the 24-70mm f/2.8L (even though that one doesn't have IS...yet...right, Canon?) Add the 2x extender and you've got a 140-400mm f/5.6 lens! It is so sharp that I can see the waterbeads on the back of a duck! Totally sweet lens!
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus
Cons: very heavy

Canon's Best Lens
on February 27, 2009

The image stabilized on this lens is excellent, as is the build and sharpness. This is the sharpest zoom that I've used with Canon. My only complaint was the light drop off in the corners when I went to a full frame sensor. This can be alleviated in Photoshop with the vignetting tool in the RAW editor and in other programs. it has a amazed me several times. Sure, it would be nice if it were a couple hundred dollars less, but it is worth it in the long run.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality
Cons: some light drop off with a full frame sensor

This is by far my favorite lens! It is always on my 1Ds MK II in the camera case. I try to shoot everything with it even if it means backing up a few paces. Virtually every portraits I shoot is with this lens.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality

I purchased this lens for my sons' outdoor sporting activities (soccer, football, baseball) but it is fast enough to use indoors for basketball too--great shots from the bleachers. It creates stunning portraits, and is great for school programs, birthday parties--just about anything. I am so pleased with this lens; it works beautifully with my 40D and my 50D.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Fast auto-focus, beautiful bokeh
