I replaced a TravelPro actual
on April 6, 2025
Posted by: Eric H.
I replaced a TravelPro actual "crew" heavy-duty rollaboard which finally died after 15 years of frequent use and weighed 10 pounds. This "retail" version version is lighter (about 7 pounds in 22" version), is available in colors other than black, and is nicely organized. Quality is good, wheels are great, and it's thoughtfully designed (I like the extra exterior slot into which you empty your pockets before going through TSA).
I returned the 22" spinner version of this bag which was disappointingly small. The pictures of that bag lead you to think that TravelPro has cleverly made space between the wheels usable for packing, when in fact that space is used by a handle, with the result that it has no more capacity than any other 22" spinner. Thank you TravelPro for still making a 2-wheel bag. With this bag, I can do most trips (even weeks) without checking any luggage.
Capacity is about the same as the old Crew bag when not expanded. It's considerably less capacity when expanded, because the expansion on this new bag tapers from bottom to top to make it less tippy (which does work actually). This bag will be best for someone who truly mainly carries it on, and who uses other bags when needing to check. If you need absolute maximum capacity and durability in a hybrid carryon/checkable and don't mind the weight, the real "crew" bags are still available at sites like mypilotstore.

Very happy after 2 trips. Lightweight. Great interior space - as only 2 wheels and not clamshell style.

Love This Bag

I dragged this bag through Italy on trains, planes and cobblestones. I appreciate the slightly larger interior volume of the bag, and want to suggest moving the handle to the outside of the bag to provide a little more interior. The bag is of great quality and weight.

I’ve traveled extensively with Travelpro bags for decades. I’m on my first trip with my new bag. Packed like a dream and fits the overhead bin without any effort on my part.

The ultimate carry on bag for International cabin crew
on November 19, 2024

I needed a bag that could hold more stuff so I did not have to check a bag, as sometimes you can wait an hour for your bags to arrive. My previous carry on bag was a 4-wheeler hard case with a neoprene laptop sleeve on the front. As it opens up clam shell-style, it doesn't seem to hold as much stuff as this more boxy-style does.
The internal organiser on my previous bag actually broke whilst compressing. I don't see this happening with my new TravelPro bag.
The previous bag acquired a huge crack in it, even though in their advertising you can through it from the second floor balcony and it magically bounces back. I was not so lucky. The TravelPro is a soft case, so it won't crack.
The four-wheel bag I had looked glamorous whilst strolling through the airport, however once you hit carpet, it became difficult to roll, especially when fully loaded. The 2-wheels are large on the TravelPro Crew Classic without compromising internal capacity. I have noticed less pain in my wrist.
In terms of internal organisation, there are 2 outer pockets to store items you may need frequently. The upper pocket does become difficult to access if the bag is fully loaded, so best used for smaller items like keys.
There is a design function that helps keep your case bottom-heavy so that it is less likely to topple over, which works well.
Obviously if you pay more, you get more. The top models have USB charging, better internal organisation, etc. but for what I need, I was happy to compromise some creature comforts.
I have recommended this bag to all my crew friends, and I show them how much I can fit in it. Typically I can pack enough clothes and a projector to watch TV for up to 4 days at this stage. This includes;
1 uniform set (pants, shirt, tie, serving jacket)
1 pair of trainers
1 pair of casual shoes
Gym clothes for 4 days
Casual clothes for 4 days
Sweater and down jacket
6 pairs of underwear and socks
Projector and assorted cables
Travel body scales
Hair styling tools
Electric razor
Hat
Combined with my crew personal bag, I have enough stuff!
