As with all things Vitamix, the tall/thin 64-oz carafe is well built and should outlast me. The shape is optimized for smoothies. For that use it is perfect. The wider/low profile 64-oz jar is better for soups and other recipes. I'm trusting that the co$t will balance with durability since this collection of plastic, rubber, and steel cost as much as an All-Clad pan or Wustof chef knife.

While the Vitamix is certainly able to handle the blending of thicker mixtures, such as hummus and nut butter, there are two important key factors to keep in mind - speed and use of the tamper.
Because it is a high performance blender, the Vitamix is designed to be run on the highest speed your unit has for the majority of the recipes you are blending. Therefore, please make sure you are processing on the highest speed to get the best performance from your product. Additionally, thicker blends will require the assistance of the tamper. The tamper directs food downward into the blades in order to prevent air pockets from forming, which occurs most commonly with thicker blends.

I do not like this container. It was a replacement for the shorter/wider container that came with the original mixer. The taller container does not work as well for thicker smoothies and mixes. I would not purchase again.

The container design is nice but too bad it isn't cylindrical in shape to make the contents pour out or be able to remove with a rubber spatula easier. The previous container had a lid that clamped down, while this one is mostly a softer rubber with 2 ears that pop over the lip of the container. Improvement yes, but needs considerable force to get them to lock in place. If they don't seal completely, you'll be the first to know.
