I purchased the grill several months ago. We always clean and cover when done. The grates , do not seem to be able to withstand the heat.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I Like the Old Grate Better

I have owned Weber charcoal grills for 30+ years and have absolutely loved them. But this grate that came on my new Performer grill is horrible. There is no way to hang the grate when lighting the grill since the round part falls out so there's always a greasy mess. And the spatula is always catching on that round part when grilling burgers. Looks like I will be trying to clean up and use the 20-year-old rusty grate from my oldest grill. Never thought when paying so much money for the grill that I would get something designed so poorly. Why change something that worked so well for so many years?
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Terrible design - center piece falls into coals

The center piece of the grate is not attached to the larger grate... I am not sure why, except so that Weber can sell a bunch of cooking accessories to fit into the hole.
For those of us who just like to grill on grates, this removable piece is a nightmare. As other customers have already pointed out, the center piece falls into the coals on a regular basis. Trying to get that hot metal off of hot coals through a hole that is surrounded by other hot metal is a treat.
If Weber wants to keep the removable center, fine, but they should design a way that you can lock the center piece onto the outer part of the grate so it is secure (and thereby safer).
Or they should just make and sell a normal grate (aka, no hole) with this thicker gauge. I would gladly buy that accessory. There, you win.
There is nothing gourmet about burning yourself.

Very good, but one problem

Very good, but the center section falls out under normal use. I know it seems obvious, but not compatible with my routine of hanging the dirty grate on the side while the coals are heating.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Center Grate Defective/Warped

I bought a Gourmet BBQ System Cooking Grates - 22" charcoal grill. The center ring completely warped and now falls down to the coals rendering the grill useless. Very disappointed. Need replacement 22.5" cooking grate wire insert to continue grilling. Will add photo of defective component at a later time.
Love the grill but not the grate.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
