Amazing coverage, rock solid performance

I am using this in Access Point mode with gigabit ethernet backhaul. Located in the centre of my main floor 2 story home (2,300sq ft). I get full bars throughout all levels on 5ghz, even basement, no dead spots. Moving to my yard it jumps to 2.4ghz smoothly and still full bars at the very edges of my property (about 170ft from AP). I get my full ISP speed of 300mbps on 5g, about half that on 2g. This result is simply outstanding compared to my still very capable Linksys WRT3200 it replaced. Note i tested with a Wifi 6 capable device, but even Wifi 5 devices are seeing a huge improvement. Netgear may not offer as many bells and whistles on paper as other competitors, but trust me they perform second to none. I still have old N300 netgear routers in use going strong, they super reliable. I feel Netgear is the Apple of routers, definitely worth the premium. Just avoid budget models when it comes to Netgear, middle of the pack is best. This model is the sweet spot for their new Wifi 6 lineup, highly recommended!

Works well for my household

1250sqft home. My old Wifi router would drop on all devices and not extend to the corners of the house.
This unit seems to be a power house. Full range and consistent speed across my property now. I can now use my streaming services on my TV without dropping/losing signal mid-show.
Streams '4k' content from Netflix and Dysney+ consistently to my smart TV.
Will see how it performs with the Series X soon enough.

Disappointed

Purchased this router to replace an old Nighthawk R7000. When comparing WiFi signals side by side, the RAX50 was slightly better than the R7000 on the 2.4 GHz band, but the real disappointment is in the 5 GHz band. The RAX50 would barely make two thirds of the R7000. It was bad enough that nothing would connect to 5 GHz when you were a floor away from the router. I went through every setting imaginable on the router to try and get better performance with no luck. I reverted back to the R7000 and devices at the furthest reaches of my house would connect at 5 GHz again. Further reading about Netgear's routers makes me question the quality of new Netgear devices. I am going to try a different brand.

Bought this unit as a replacement for an Asus which started failing after 3 years. Overall the Netgear seems faster but the user interface is clunky and poorly designed. Where the Asus had a super helpful and smooth interface with lots of great tools, the netgear has a few, however anything useful requires a subscription after a trial free month.... If I had known that was the case, I would have tried a different brand. Still might...

Last Netgear product I'm ever buying

When you think of technological progress, you imagine a product or service that would lead to improvement of some kind. In a noticeable and definitive way. After many a wrestling matches with this router, all I could conclude was that my older router was orders of magnitude better than this one. This is true especially on the 5Ghz band.
Moreover, the Nighhawk app is an absolute nightmare. They force this service called Armor on you for a 30 day trial, without any prompting. Navigation is confusing as can be, and any tinkering only causes an even worse outcome than if you had just left it alone. Will move on from this and try another brand. Horrible.

Purchased on sale, happy so far

There is a lot here, but the bottom line is that this was a good purchase, especially on sale. The range and performance did very well in a large home; no glaring issues with the setup, speeds, or features.
I purchased this modem to replace an Airport Extreme A1521 6th generation 2013 (which was appearing to have some problems on the Ethernet ports), as I need to make sure my home network was back on-line fast. There are some many wireless router options out there, how to pick? I have a large 4-bedroom home and was worried about getting the same or better converge from my upstairs corner office. The Neatgear RAX50 seems to be performing as well or better than my Apple AX across the whole home, even providing some further improvement in what were previously trouble spots in coverage (and extending into the yard beyond the brick exterior). Coverage varies by so many factors, but I would say the performance is very good for a large 2-story detached home; I also use a wifi-analyzer to make sure any neighbour interference or channels don't hinder the actual performance possible. I always wonder about people who complain about range and performance, since wifi setup can be complex (even with the autoselection features). I was able to get the full 1 Gbps from my ISP on the Ethernet port, and over 640 Mbps using my iPhone XR right near the router in the 5 Ghz band. Nothing wonky on the networking. There are so many comparable models out there, and I had also considered the Asus RT-AX88U. The RAX50 has a pretty solid web interface that provides a lot of detailed configuration, and the app provides a subset of that (which is fine with me). The responsiveness of the app is a little slow (i.e., it took about 20 seconds to load the Traffic Metering screen on the app, with just one field: enable, and the device setting screen took about 45 seconds and failed, even when connected on the same WiFi network), owing to how the data seems to be fetched from the router. It gives you access to access control and data metering. That seems unfortunate, and i just found myself going to the web portal, which is actually quite good and expansive. It has a sleek look so it's not unsightly; i like the option to wall mount. I have had an odd issue with my older MacBook Air in a way away part of the house, where it shows strong strength but doesn't connect (incidentally the TV, console and iPad all work great in that same area, hmmmm). The NeatGear armor is an interesting feature, as it does vulnerability scans on network devices. Kinda cool, but not something i would subscribe to and pay for (you get a year free apparently).

The hunt for a new router
on November 27, 2020

I had a 6 year old router than my phone told me was unsecure for wifi connection. So I tried a new lower cost Wifi 6 router. It worked fine but had some issue so I asked my provide what was recommended. They said that the Nighthawk was one of the good ones so I tried it.
Worked ok. Was faster than previous one I tried. Low lag time, good speed, and good range is some directions. I tried it for 14 days, I had a problem connecting my old Windows 7 machine. I had to disable and re-enable the NIC card in the machine to get it to connect. It's a dual boot, with linux, linux had no problem connecting.
My ipad had issues connecting in certain directions from the router, so did my wife.
It came with anti an malware software trial. Didn't like the implementation of it. I had difficulties with my security cam's too. So I return it.
I have a lot of different network requirements so I need to upscale. The Nighthawk would be great for a simpler environment.

Improved my Wi-Fi Coverage
on December 26, 2020

Solved my issues with spotty Wi-Fi connectivity! After setting up my smart home (smart plugs, security cameras, Echo Shows, Echo Flexes, Google Nest, Philips hue smart bulbs, etc) my current router supplied by Videotron would repeatedly drop my connected devices and my Wi-Fi coverage no longer reached my bedroom. This nighthawk router SOLVED my problem. I now have consistent download speed rates throughout my apartment and my 24+ devices remain connected. Note that the Netgear web user interface gives you access to more router settings than the ipad app, which is more simple and intuitive.
