Frustration My Name is Greenworks

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this mower almost a year ago and have been using it since last summer. In that time I've gotten to know this mower well and my experiences with it have been extremely frustrating.
The mower struggles with basic tasks. It cuts off constantly while mowing because it gets clogged with grass. Your mow is constantly interrupted to turn the mower over and poke the blockage clear with a stick or bounce the thing up and down like a cave man to loosen it up.
Even when using the bag attachment (which isn't very big btw) the mower leaves ugly grass clumps all over the yard. I have found no way to prevent this. It barely has enough power to get grass into the bag.
Finally even with two fully charged batteries there isn't enough charge to fully mow my small yard. Which means I have to pause my mow 2/3 of the way through and wait for one of the batteries to charge back up enough to finish. Incredibly annoying.
If I could go back I would not buy this mower again. I would not recommend it to friends or family. It barely works and you constantly have to wrestle and fight with it. It makes mowing incredibly frustrating and difficult every single time I use it.
Pros: Quiet, Environmentally Safe
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello Peter99.
Sorry to hear about your experience. When units begin clogging, shutting off, or leaving clumps, it is often tied to cutting conditions and airflow rather than a lack of overall capability. Tall, dense, or damp grass is the most common cause of clogging and shutdowns, as it restricts airflow under the deck and triggers the mower’s protection system. For best results, try mowing when the grass is completely dry, start at a higher deck height, and take a first pass before lowering for a finish cut, this reduces load and helps prevent buildup. Slowing your walking speed can also gives the blade time to properly lift and discharge clippings. If you are bagging, please make sure the bag is fully seated and not overfilled, as this can reduced airflow and will cause clumping and poor collection; periodically clearing the underside of the deck and ensuring the blade is sharp can also make a noticeable difference in both cutting and bagging performance.
Regarding runtime, battery performance can drop in heavy conditions like overgrown or thick lawns, so needing multiple batteries or partial recharges can occur if the mower is working under constant high load. Using a higher cut first and maintaining the lawn more frequently can help extend runtime per charge. That said, if you are still experiencing frequent shutdowns, excessive clogging, or very short runtime even in normal, dry conditions, it may indicate a battery, blade, or airflow-related issue that we can look into further. We would recommend reaching out to support so we can help troubleshoot with you directly. They can be reached either using the online chat function, on Greenworks Tools page, or by calling 1-888-909-6757.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just purchased this 80v self-propelled 21" mower, with 2, 4-amp batteries. So far I love it.

Greenworks 80V 21" cordless self-propelled mower

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Easy to assemble. Slightly heavy for woman to use. Handle is easy to set to suitable height. However, looks like the handle is too long for me and unable to be adjusted: the distance between the deck/front wheels and the drive lever is way too far. It's hard for me to see up to the front when mowing. (My previous gas mower has shorter distance and so, easier for me to see obstacles in front to avoid.
Pros: Convenient

nice mower, meh batteries
on May 9, 2026

I bought this mower two weeks ago, super happy with it out of the box. first trial mowing, the 2AH battery was dead in about 15 mins.
Second trail mowing, both batteries gone in about 30 mins.
Not a chance this mower with these batteries will mow anywhere near 3/4 acre. my lot is 1/2 acre and there is a house, patio, garage, barn etc on half of it. I'm not getting close to 1/4 acre on a charge.
Grass isn't super long, but I am using the walk behind (powered wheel drive) feature.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are glad to hear you are happy with the mower’s overall performance, but we understand how frustrating the runtime has been. Battery runtime on the 80V platform can vary quite a bit depending on usage conditions, and using the self-propelled drive does place additional demand on the batteries. Factors like grass thickness, cutting height (especially lower settings), mowing speed, and terrain can all impact how long the batteries last. To help improve runtime, you might try mowing at a slightly higher deck height, using the self-propel feature only when needed, and maintaining a steady, moderate walking pace. Keeping the blade sharp and mowing more frequently to avoid heavier cuts can also make a noticeable difference. It is also worth noting that a 2.0Ah battery will provide shorter runtime compared to a 4.0Ah, so performance may feel limited when relying on smaller-capacity batteries, especially with self-propel engaged. For larger areas or extended sessions, higher-capacity batteries (such as 4.0Ah or above) are typically better suited.
If you continue to see a reduced runtime under normal mowing conditions, it may be worth reaching out to Greenworks for further evaluation. They can be reached either using the online chat function, on Greenworks Tools page, or by calling 1-888-909-6757.

Poor cutting and mulching

I do like the light weight, and quite functioning. However, I have tried multiple times/setting to get it to mulch and not leave a mess behind (clumps of non-mulched and missed blades of grass) on my healthy yard, even when barely taking anything off the top. I have reached out to Support and they sent me the "best" blade they have (which looked just like the one it came with), this was of no benefit. I pulled out my ~20+yr old gas mower and it still does a much better job of cutting and mulching than this mower (leaves little to no visible remnants). Maybe it would work better on a yard not as healthy and thick as my small yard.
I would recommend looking elsewhere for a battery powered mower.
Pros: Convenient, Easy to Use, Quiet, Environmentally Safe

Hello RGCvik.
We are sorry to hear the mulching performance has not met your expectations, especially since you have already taken the time to try different settings and even worked with support on a blade replacement. While it is good to hear you are enjoying the lighter weight and quiet operation, clumping and visible clippings can occur when grass conditions are too heavy, damp, or when too much is cut in a single pass, even on healthy lawns. For best mulching results, we recommend mowing more frequently and ensuring no more than one-third of the grass height is removed per cut, as well as confirming the mower is set to the correct mulching configuration with a clean, properly installed blade. Cutting at a slightly higher deck setting and reducing ground speed can also help improve airflow and clipping circulation under the deck. That said, we understand your comparison to a gas mower and appreciate your candid feedback. If you would like additional support or a technical review of your unit’s performance, the Greenworks Tools customer success team is available to help further. They can be reached either using the online chat function, on Greenworks Tools page, or by calling 1-888-909-6757.
