Is Kitchenaid still as good now as it was in 1988?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the 3rd kitchenaid mixer. I have onethat's 35+years and still going strong but needed another for our winter home. The 3.5 mixer originally purchased was too small for my needs so I purchased this new one. I read somewhere the gears are now plastic--as I was mixing dough, I could hear gears slipping and straining while incorporating the ingredients. I hope it was just my imagination but will continue to monitor. I do love Kitchenaid products and hope they continue to make a quality product. Time will tell.
