Paper feed is a persistent problem

I love the quality of photo prints WHEN IT PRINTS, HOWEVER... This is my second Artisan (830 and now 835), and while the quality of the prints is terrific -- as good or better than my local photo lab -- the paper feed really needs some attention from Epson. I've had this printer about a year, and it sent me all kinds of error messages when I tried to print 4x6 prints last night, but the night before it had performed fairly well, with an occasional hiccup. Today, I finally got it to print 5x7's but it kept jamming with the 4x6 paper. I tried two different brands/qualities of paper and it made no difference. I am not sure I want to go through this again, but the price is reasonable enough that maybe I should just see it as disposable????

i have used only epson printers since 94 & convinced others to do the same. now i'm concerned. what happened epson? this artisan 835 prints fine but what good is that when the paper feed is so cheesy? 25% of each print job (i've kept track) goes in the trash cuz the feeder has no idea how many pages to shove through. i've tried different types of paper & different tray adjustments.. no help. eeks !! very disappointed and have quit singing the praises of epson printers. fix the feed... please !!!

Why did I buy the Artisan 835 Al-inOne Printer? I was impressed with Epson. I owned an Epson Photo RX 620 that served me well for six years. As an All- in-One, I was able to print decent color photos and scan. In fact, the scanner features film holders for 35 mm and 2 1/4 formats. Nice touch. Why would I want to change printers? Well I upgraded my Mac OS to Snow Leopard. That's when I discovered Epson lacked the drivers to fully incorporate the printer's features--scanning being the major issue. After a lengthy review of the Epson website, I learned that there is a "fix" for the scanning issue. It involves a download which provides a cumbersome process. To scan, you must go to "Preview," then select "Import " from the printer. Then begin the scan. Eliminated are any features allowing users to customize the scan details. Bummer. So I decided it was time to upgrade. I landed on the Artisan 835 because it was "Mac compatible" and produced quality photo prints. After receiving the new printer, I soon discovered it also lacks the drivers to give users full scan features if they are using Snow Leopard OS. These include scanning directly from the printer control panel or using the scanner icon on the desktop. Because there are no driver updates for Snow Leopard, the 835 also lacks full capability scanning features.
As for the printing capabilities of this unit? It is remarkable. The quality of prints is far superior to the old 620. I've tested its performance on both 8X10 and 4X6 prints. So far, it has worked flawlessly. Instructions say thel ink cartridges will eat up a lot of ink in the initial charge of the unit. That future cartridges will produce more prints. Based on my tests with the first cartridges, I've produced about 40, 4X6 and three 8X10 prints. Two cartridges are getting to the low points and the remainder are about 50%. All prints that I've done are in the "fine Print" mode. This eats more ink, but produces the best quality. My previous Epson printer always produced the best quality prints when I used Epson papers. However, I've found that other papers work just as well.
Of the four features of this Artisan, I've used three and they all have worked well so far. I do not need the fax feature and have not used it.
If you're looking for a moderately priced printer that delivers top quality photo prints, this unit is a good buy. If you want to have full scanning capabilities on your Mac, don't upgrade to Snow Leopard and you'll be just fine. I would have given this printer 4 or 5 stars if the drivers were compatible with Snow Leopard.

Epson has done it again

I have owned many epson printers but the Artesian 835 All-In-One has out done itself. The photos have amazing color and the speed of the color 4 x 6 photos is less than 10 seconds. The touch screen makes cropping photos easy even without the use of a computer. I am a scrapbooker and this is going to be a great help in creating even greater pages. Thanks Epson.

Won't print black and white only!

I bought this printer not too long ago and was very happy with it untill recently. It does print amazing pictures but will not print or copy black and white word documents if one of the color cartridges is empty. I have a brand new black cartridge and can't print because I am out of magenta ink!!!! This is utterly ridiculous that I have to go buy a cartiridge for an ink color I am not using to print in black and white. If I had know this I would not have purchased this printer and really feel like Epson is just trying to find a way to make you spend more money on their ink!
I have never had another printer that would not print AT ALL if the color cartridge was empty or taken out.

Great home printer and scanner

I have owned this printer for about two years. I use it mostly to print documents and scan & print photos. I use it often with my iPad, where I scan documents wirelessly to my iPad and then email them or save them on the iPad. This process works well and has been a help in dealing with business forms that require printing, signing followed buy scanning the signed copy and emailing it back. This is the best printer we have owned. Photo quality of prints is great as has been said in other reviews.

Artisan 835

Setup was easy and uneventfull.
The paper tray is not user friendly and seems low budget for an otherwise quality printer
The photo tray section for 4 x 6 /5x7s has trouble if the paper is not perfectly flat.
Printing Envelops , it will only work with one envelope in the tray
Paper tray needs repositioning often, doesn't recognise paper in the tray
