However, there is a spring-loaded detent that prevents the top from moving freely when making paninis or grilled sandwiches. You have to manually release the top by pushing it down and past the detent to allow the unit to work properly. I was going to order the waffle plates, but with the way the unit is designed they would all turn out lopsided.

The bottom plate always seems to be a little hotter than the top, so for best results I flip the food over halfway through cooking
