Real wood, very sturdy and not made from mdf.
There are some scratches/ marks though on some areas.

If I can do it…lol. Beautiful piece

I love this piece, did a lot of shopping before I found Plank and Beam. The solid wood is excellent quality at an affordable price. I’m 83 and put it together myself in about 3 hours. The instructions were very easy to follow. I made 1 tiny mistake at the third piece I installed and it didn’t manifest until I went to put on the last piece, the middle door. The tiny pilot holes for the hinges were in the back because I wasn’t paying attention. . But I got the door on despite that. I get so many compliments on it and feel very proud that I could put it together.

Cute furniture piece

Love this piece. It’s exactly what I was looking for but there are a few quality control issues that are a little frustrating for the price of this. First, there is a big nick in the paint on the baseboard, which shows very clearly since I bought the black version. It could be fixed with a paint pen, but for the price this is just sloppy. Second, the push-style latch is nice but one of them doesn’t function properly. Hard to repair this. Third, and this is just a personal preference thing, be aware that the unit will fill up with dust, pet hair, etc. very easily due to the open slate design. Also if you have a cat that jumps up on furniture, the top (of the black version) shows 100% of dust or pet hair. Last, the 6 individual cubbies are pretty awkward sizes and there is no way to adjust the width (just the shelf height) but this is not necessarily a criticism of the piece, just design that doesn’t function super well for me. Overall I really like this piece but the quality isn’t the best for the price.
