BATTERY COMPARTMENT SOLVE

I was having the same battery compartment issue. Stick a screwdriver into the center of the compartment to gently pry the base off, and you'll see the center connector is teardrop-shaped, I had it turned so it didn't line up correctly. Once I put it in the correct way, I'm able to get the lid on and off the base easily. Hope that helps!

Read this if Battery Cover wont seat properly

Replacing my 20+ yr old, heavy, 8 “D” battery Coleman with the 2 glass bulbs bc I cant get them anymore. Chose this one based on size and weight. I went to install batteries and encountered the same issue many others have. The battery compartment locked up and wouldn’t completely seat. It also wouldnt remove. Multiple reviews mention this problem, but only one actually figured it out! The tube that inserts has a slight tear drop shape. I used a flat screwdriver to VERY gently unseat the cover. Once off I could see the issue. It’s amazing that Coleman, in all their responses to others reviews, dont mention this and nothing in manual. Once you see this shape, you’ll be able to line it up properly to take it off and on.

The knob on this lantern broke after one trip. It’s constructed of cheap plastic. And now the entire lantern has stopped working

Waste of Money

I purchased this product two days before a severe thunderstorm was to hit. I anticipated an outage due to the severity of the storm. I wasted my time and money. As numerous reviews have mentioned. The battery compartment got stuck as I was attempting to close it. I could not open or close it. I struggled with it for hours then I sought another source of backup lighting. I should have read the reviews prior to purchasing. I thought Coleman made good products.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Our battery comparments/cartridges are difficult to open. Try using a coin to pry it open. Usually pops right open.

No more carrying 30 lbs in batteries on every trip

There is nothing I can complain about when it comes to this lantern. It's durable, has 3 choices of brightness, doesn't eat batteries like crazy like my old one did, and seems pretty sturdy and durable so far. The battery compartment is like any other on something that keeps water out. If it didn't have the push and twist seal, it would not be very helpful in a rain storm for example. I purchased this for camping, so that is an important feature. I am not sure why so many reviewers are having trouble with this compartment. I figured it out the first time I put batteries into it. You just need to make sure it's aligned properly, push up, and twist.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Poor product quality

I would highly not recommend buying this product, the battery cartridge won’t close or open and it’s just not worth your time and the frustration.

Place the hinged side of the battery pack to the palm of your hand with the latch facing out. Your hand should cover the top of the battery pack. Using you middle fingers, press the opening latch while pulling up and back as if to simulate opening a can of soda. The battery pack may be hard to open on the first try because the plastic is new, however it will be easier to open when replacing the batteries.

Lousy battery compartment

I agree with the other reviews, only wish I saw them sooner. Too bad they are aware of the awful design of their battery compartment and have put so many customers thru such aggravation and haven't announced a design change. I opened the bottom of the lantern just fine, put in the batteries, now I can't close the lid or get it off again. I followed the instructions they provided in one of the responses below but it hasn't worked. I wish I could get the lid off to try it again or get the new batteries out so I can use them in another product. If I could close the lid and use this it may be an okay product but I'll never know. Now I'm out the cost of the lantern plus the batteries. Terrible product!

Overpriced

This was a very disappointing product. Its materials appear to be made of cheap quality and when installing batteries it would not close nor would the lid unscrew. It is stuck without being able to open or close it. I am not sure of its brightness because I can not open it or close it.
