I measured the widest part on the outside opposite the rings. I wanted a 2" binder (which is what I measured.) However; when I received it it stated it was a 2" binder but I measured it to be 3". Even though it's too wide I can still use it. In reality I guess I wanted a 1.5" binder.

This 3 ring binder holds a year full of meeting information. I particularly like the shape of the binder (rounded not square) and the fact is opens and closes easily.
