After several weeks with the iRobot Roomba 1020, I’m genuinely impressed with how much it has simplified my floor cleaning routine—especially with the self-emptying feature, which is a total game changer in this price range.
What I Love
- Self-Emptying Base:
This is hands-down my favorite part of the Roomba 1020. After each cleaning, the robot automatically empties its bin into the docking station’s larger container. I only need to empty this base about once every couple of weeks, even with pets in the house. That means less hands-on maintenance and more time enjoying a clean home.

- Strong Cleaning Performance:
It consistently picks up dust, debris, crumbs, and pet hair on both my carpets and hard floors. I noticed it rarely misses spots, even in corners, and the suction is noticeably stronger compared to previous Roombas I’ve owned.

- Smart Mapping & Navigation:
The mapping is accurate, and I love that it’s able to navigate around furniture, transition between rooms, and avoid getting stuck. It always knows how to find its way back to the charging base.

- App & Voice Control:
Setting up and controlling the Roomba 1020 through the iRobot app is straightforward. Scheduling, monitoring cleaning progress, and sending it on a spot-clean is easy from my phone. Voice commands with Alexa also work reliably.

- Low Maintenance:
Between the self-emptying dock and washable filters, regular maintenance is minimal. I do occasionally have to pull hair out of the roller, but even that’s not difficult.

Cons to Consider
- No Advanced Obstacle Avoidance:
The basics are covered (it avoids walls and large furniture), but it still occasionally bumps into stray cords, or shoes.

User friendly great time saver

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have a dog and a small child, and I am constantly vacuuming and mopping to keep things clean. This Roomba saves me time and crosses two chores off of my weekly to-do list.
I appreciate the ease of set-up. It was pretty much ready to go right out of the box. The box includes a quick start guide, but I do wish it came with a printed instruction booklet. You can find the detailed instruction booklet in the Roomba app.
I was impressed with how quickly it made a map of my home. It also does a great job of navigating obstacles. I was concerned that it would struggle getting over my area rug, but it handles it, and the other rugs in my home, like a champ.
I like the voice feedback as it cleans. It will tell you when it’s done or if it is stuck or low on batteries. You will also get a notification in your app if there is a problem while it is in operation.
Normally I use the “standard clean” mode. I find that the deep clean mode uses too much of the battery life to make it worth it. If I have a deep cleaning job, I will just use my regular vacuum.
I used the app to create a nightly cleaning schedule. It is quiet enough not to disturb my sleeping daughter. I appreciate that you can automate the cleaning process, giving me one less thing to think about.
Keep in mind, the filter, mop pad, edge brush, multi-surface brush and debris bag in the base will need replacing. The app tracks your usage to help manage replacements. If you want to mop with more than just water you can also purchase a solution to use. I’ve been using distilled water without any solution. I find that is enough to keep my floors clean in between regular mopping.
Before I had a Roomba I didn’t have the time or energy to mop and vacuum daily. This has for sure made my day-to-day chores easier. Remember, you will still need to occasionally deep clean with a regular mop and vacuum, but this will keep things tidy in between. It also gives my family motivation to keep the floors picked up so it can do its job at the end of each day.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] very quiet and low maintenance vacuum it has amazing features like room mapping mop and vacuum modes and presets you can customize to your needs it cleans well has a 2 cycle battery life in my house to get it all the way clean mopping and vacuuming.

I was scared to see if it would actually work and not have to babysit it and omg it is amazing! I let it map and blocked off what I didn’t need it to see and it worked out so good. I love being able to come home to a clean house and see the carpet lines. It has to go back 2 times to charge before it’s done with my main floor level but I do not mind. It not loud at all, and only is when it emptying the container. This is an amazing product and honestly has changed my life!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This thing is absolutely amazing! Dream come true literally, it’s great for when you’re just too tired to do housework! It talks, vacuums and mops and self empties, it comes with an app to control everything, it’s super easy to navigate and it tells you exactly what to do. The battery life is great, but it returns to the dock after the task is done. It’s not too noisy, we have a baby and it didn’t even bother her in the slightest. My floors have probably never been as clean.

easy, convenient smart way to clean

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Roomba is excellency for routine floor maintenance. I love the floor mapping and self-emptying features. Works well with hardwood floors and does an excellent job at cleaning area rugs. Has no problem transitioning from a rug to hardwood floors. The Roomba allows me to focus on other tasks. Does exceptionally well on picking up food and brush can be replaced to dust and mop. Would work amazing if you have pets and small children. However, the noise is louder than expected especially when emptying into the dustbin. It doesn’t take away from deep cleaning as it does miss corners that are hard to reach. The battery life is exceptionally good for a small duplex. Overall, it’s a good investment.

Good for in between vacuuming

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m pleasantly surprised by how much it picks up and how well it can get around. It’s great to have as a cleaner in between thorough vacuuming. The noise level is a little high especially when emptying the dust bin but it’s typical for a vacuum and the emptying only lasts a few seconds. I wish it could tell the shape of the apartment better but I’m not shocked

It has really helped me a lot because it not only vacuums but also mops, which makes my work as a housewife lighter and gives me time to rest. It is very easy to use through an application where I can program schedules. It comes with a storage bag, and to be able to map, I need to add water or floor cleaners compatible with my robot. In short, a great helper in my house.
