So many dutch ovens are round. I really like the oval design on this one. The natural properties of cast iron make it heat very evenly and hold temperature for a long time. The enamel coating means no seasoning and easy cleanup. The black matte interior gives great browning and the braising spikes on the lid keep my food moist. I like doing a whole chicken in here but even more i like to do a nice long braise in pieces. The rooster knob is available separately but comes with this model......bonus. The exterior enamel color is super attractive and is so much easier to clean than regular cast iron.
I love that this pot is big enough to fit an entire chicken because of it's oval shape! Also, the lid has little nubs to evenly distribute condensation, so it is self basting. The fact that it is enameled cast iron makes it naturally non-stick with no chemicals and no fussy upkeep, like normal cast iron. The knob on top is so cute being a little chicken. I also love that cast iron is great at heating evenly and maintaining heat well.
Matte black is my favortie color, I have a few colors in other Staub pieces that I like to mix with the black. It looks so rustic to me and I like to keep it out on the stove! My daughter bought me this for Mother's Day one year and it has quickly become one of my favorite cocottes. I do make coq au vin it too! It is the perfect size for family gatherings be it at the holidays or your Sunday dinner. The self-basting lid produces moist and tender results for what could be not so moist and tender if left to cook without basting. The dark enamel interior cleans up so easily, even after long braises in the oven or on top of the stove. I use this cocotte for many dishes and take it directly from the oven/stove to the table. It makes such a great presentation!
The weight makes it great. Heats quickly then holds it as long as you need. Size is perfect for 2 or 10. Tiny spikes beneath lid distributes moisture thru entire vessel.
This is a great shape to prepare a coq au vin, Chicken in wine! with the oval shape the veggis fit nicely all around the bird. the chicken is equally spaced all around the pot so no risk if the cast iron providing too much heat in some area.
This coq au vin can cook anything. I love to use it for roasting chickens. The inside is coated with Staub's famous black matte finish which sears beautifully. The self basting spikes on the inside of the lid collect all condensation and return it to the pan, so nice moist chicken. Don't stop at chicken, it does roasts, pan fries steaks and burgers, we have even made cioppino in it.
I absolutely love my Staub pots. This one is a great size for roasting a chicken or any other roast for that matter. I also use it for soups, stews, chili and one pot dinners. I love the way it heats so evenly and retains the heat for serving. The matte black coating on the interior cleans up so easily.
Love these pots for the rustic, yet sophisticated look, all at the same time! The chicken knob gives away the wonderful surprise inside - bringing the whole chicken with potatoes or rice and veggies to the table and serving straight from this cocotte! Heats evenly and quickly and the spiked lid keeps the food inside super moist!
