Great big screen!

It’s fast, accurate and way easy to see. Doesn’t matter how much sweat is in your eyes! Screen switching is fast and smooth and it connects to sensors super fast. My Edge 830 seems so tiny and old.

Awesome upgrade

I have this unit for a few weeks now and love it. I upgraded from the 1030 and it was worth it in my opinion. Solar addition is awesome I never plugged it in yet and it has been working for almost 1400 miles. Awesome unit !

Not so great...

I upgraded from my Garmin Edge 130 plus or at least I thought I had. The Edge 1040 Solar has many amazing features to dial in your training and track every aspect of your ride but the simplest feature like connecting a sensor is a nightmare. Very frustrating to be getting ready to do a big ride and it disconnects from your heart rate monitor, cadence, and phone. I'm hoping there is perhaps an update in the future that will make this a seamless and reliable task. I give it 2 stars because I do like the solar aspect, the bigger screen, touch screen, and easy-to-read display, but if the connectivity does not improve I will be returning it and going back to my simple Edge 130 plus.

Top end cycling computer

I like to have the newest gadget, so upgraded to an Edge 1040 Solar from my Edge 1030+. The Solar has a few extra features which are nice, especially as it is also supposed to have better GPS system than the 1030, so should track better for mountain biking. The solar charging is nice, but it doesn't work as well when it's really hot (while on the bike since you're moving, works ok, but if you just leave it sitting out in the hot sun, it gets hot and stops charging. Everything else continues to work just fine, but it gives a message saying solar charging will restart when the device cools). And as long as the battery life is, I'm not sure I really needed the solar charging. Unless you are doing ridiculously long rides, or multi-days without ability for opportunity to charge, the regular 1040 will be sufficient for most.

Best Edge for cycling so far

I’ve ridden hundreds of miles since buying this a month ago. Definitely worth the upgrade from the 1030 plus, which is an excellent unit. But the 1040 Solar has to incredible battery life and solar charging that really works. 94% charge after 4 hours of riding. The controls are easier to use, and there is lots of information readily available.

I like it, but there are 2 things missing right off the bat.
1-“pinned” rides in RWGPS don’t automatically sync like before on the 1030+
2-the “start-up text” is missing from the Garmin folder. Adding your name & number to this text allows both to show up on the start-up screen. Might help get your unit back if lost.

Edge 1040 for the win Solar, USB-C & new interface

This is my first 10X0 Series Edge. Have been riding with Edge 8x0 since the 810.I didn’t think that I needed the big screen dimensions. I thought the battery life needed to be improved. Hated the micro USB interface for charging.
Garmin addressed ALL of these concerns with the Edge 1040 solar. Solar charge is amazing and worth the upgrade.
But the biggest surprise is that the large screen is so helpful. No squinting to see your data. Touchscreen controls are outstanding. It’s not smartphone easy, but its perfect for cycling and works great with rain or sweat on the surface.
I briefly tried out a couple of competitive models - but I’m so glad to be back with this Garmin. The Edge 1040 Solar is by far my favorite cycling computer of all time.

Love the new features!

Same great Edge but with more "stuff." I really like both the new stamina and course power screens. Great for measuring your effort on short or long courses. So far the battery life is exceptional. 4+ hour rides and and still nearly 90% charge. Recommend even with the price.
