Battery life is great. Did a 6 day bikepacking trip and only needed to charge it twice. However solar does need direct sun exposure so its not as useful as I thought.
I really like the big screen for navigation and lots of data fields.
One negative was that if the the route is long the ProClimb screens are extremely slow. I had to disable that feature unfortunately.

Amazing head unit

Coming from an Old competitors unit, I'm really enjoying the real estate on the 1040. My old unit also never calculated elevation properly. It's the small things in life people, all I want is decent elevation readings. Ha ha. Anyway this is a killer unit, integration with Garmin training was my motivation and having a complete ecosystem makes things so much easier in planning and transferring data.

The device has excellent battery life, hundreds of data available to list up to 10x on one screen. For actual use it is fast and reliable, no Bluetooth issues so far! However the charging port initially didn't seem to be charging the device. Solar charging is way cool and it calculates added time while riding in the sunlight/also at rest. Connects all my rides upon stopping straight to Strava and aggregates all my metrics on the garmin app üëçüèº

Love the solar

I love the solar capability in gaining life for my Garmin. Overall I like the unit and Garmin ecosystem. I rated a 4 because for the past two months, I keep having to re-pair my Garmin to my phone because the Garmin fails to sync my rides over to Strava. I have the latest update so there must be some glitch in the software. Other than that, Garmin All Day.

I purchased this to replace an 830 Edge. Overall love the larger screen and the battery life is awesome. The climb feature seems to need some improvement as it isn't entirely accurate on the climbs, showing it has ended when you still have .5 miles to go.

NIGHT AND DAY FROM 1030!

3 weeks with 1040 solar and could not be more impressed! Read detailed product reviews, but way too many enhancements to list. Most important, the processing is instant compared to 1030. Second would be the user friendly logical menus and general navigation through screens. The solar is a feel good, not a must. My 1030 became painfully slow to upload ride despite hours trouble shooting. Certain there is a fix that will come in time. I will keep 1030 for bike in other state and hand down 1000 to one of kiddos. I have always been Garmin loyal (despite trying wahoo and others) from marine to handhelds to Overlander in off road vehicles. I would go back to Fenix if they would incorporate cell like Apple.
So, if you like the bells / whistles, max batt life, best GPS, excellent screen functionality, and support (in my experience)... this unit should be good for 3-5 years. Unless you can't stand not having latest / greatest, although not sure what is missing on 1040!
