I purchased the 1040 as a replacement for my 1030+ that was run over on the street. I can not image not having a Garmin Edge for my rides, so it was a no-brainer to head straight to my bike shop and invest hundreds of dollars for a replacement - and to upgrade to the 1040. The data and configuration transfer was impressively quick and easy - even though my previous unit had been destroyed! With this upgrade from the 1030+ I notice and appreciate a few improvements: The configurable home screen, the more colorful and detailed graphics (such as the climbing screen), and once I pass 100 miles the distance is still displayed in hundredths. It seems I'm getting faster updates on the current 'grade', but I can't confirm that. The 'solar' recharging feature is interesting (and perhaps a bragging point), but I doubt I'll ever need to rely on it and arguably it is not worth the extra cost if money is tight.
Again, I cannot imagine riding without a Garmin Edge 10-something. Since I had to replace my destroyed 1030+, I'm glad I opted for the 1040 instead of the less expensive 1030.

I am really impressed with the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar, it has unbelievable battery life. The ClimimPro is very impressive. I moved from a Garmin 1030 which was a great device, but the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar is at another level.

The 1040 Solar has so many more features than my 820. Synching it with my electronic shifters is really cool. As my eyes get worse with age, the larger screen and display are definitely something that I appreciate.

With the long battery life, and most of my riding being towards the evening, not much power is put back with solar. The unit it self is great, and I would likely buy the same model again.

Edge 1040 Solar

I've done multiple rides that lasted more than seven hours and only lost 30 to 40% battery life. That's more than I can say for any computer I've ever owned.
The connectivity issues of the older computers seem to be gone for the most part. Although recently, I did have some issues pairing with my HRM and my power meter but I think those issues were more due to those other units themselves.
And now that you can follow tracks from Strava or Ride with GPS, very easily, and connect to Trailforks. This seems to be the ultimate Cycling computer in my opinion.

Expensive with cumbersome user interface

I bought this computer to replace a Wahoo Roam as a software update resulted in incorrect speed and distance readings that Wahoo could not correct after 6 weeks.
The 1040 solar screen is to dark at settings below 100% and just bright enough at 100%. This cuts its battery life in half a big deal as even riding in bright sunny conditions makes little difference. Only the built in battery level on Specialized eBikes can be monitored as there is no way to monitor the range extender battery level.
Swiping between screens sometimes takes 2 or three swipes, a button to do this would have been great.
The user interface is much more complicated than the Wahoo
The routing is much better than the Wahoo Roam and the the larger screen with 9 data fields is makes reading it easier.

Several improvements over previous models

The solar charging feature works very well. I haven't used it in overcast conditions yet but after several rides the battery level has barely decreased. I also like the feature that allow me to easily change the DI2 shift mode. One problem I've found is that the 1040 seems to have trouble displaying electronic shifting battery level, especially for ETAP. The display fades in and out at seemingly random times. The other minor problem is that the sun effect that raises the temperature display seems more extreme with this model.
