Good value replacement machine

I recently purchased a Brother 1034D serger due to problems with the serger I inherited from my mother. After purchase I immediately used it merely to overlock the raw edges of fabric I had purchased prior to laundering, and it performed very well in this basic function. I recently tackled making a slipcover for my sofa and am using a fabric that is heavier and on which the raw edges ravel badly. It did the job pretty well until I tried to use it on some seams that had multiple layers. The lower looper thread broke first and I had some difficulty until I realized that I would have to thread the upper looper as well before I could continue using it. Once I did that, it worked very well. I still need to learn the other basics of the machine, but am confident I will enjoy sewing with it. I was disappointed with the instructions in the manual and dvd received with the serger in that it did not have clear instructions regarding the threading of the loopers. I also had difficulty in removing the cover to use it as a free-arm as there was no real instruction and the cover was difficult to remove at first. I was reluctant to just pull, but that is what I ended up doing and it came off fine. Since then it has removed easily.

Why did I wait so long?

I have been interested in sergers for a long time but was intimidated by how challenging I had heard threading a serger could be. After reviewing the accompanying videos and looking at the "threaded" unit... I followed the diagrams in the manual and threaded the unit. I started with a few simple projects of different fabrics and am very excited about taking on more challenging projects.

I like it other than it being so loud. Other than that I like it.

So far it works out great,i've only used it a few times because I don't have serger thread, the only downside is it's really loud and shaky when i'm serging. the threading was a bit confusing at first, so I watched a video on youtube and got the hang of it.

Very pleased with the Brother 1034D 3/4 Serger. I am a seamstress and costumer for College and High School productions. I've been looking for a new Serger because my White Serger had been giving me trouble for a year now. I am very pleased with this serger. It's easy to thread and a really solid machine. Well worth the price I paid.

I am enjoying my serger, but it is a learn as I go process. A lot of practice which is okay, but I will say that the DVD that came with my serger was of no value to me. It may be my computer or the lack of my computer skills, but I could not increase the size of the video. Therefore, I was attempting to try and watch a 2 .5 inch video. Thank you.

Never having used a serger before I was a bit anxious to sew with it. My fears were unfounded. The U-Tube videos and instruction booklets made it easy to begin. It took a few attempts to get all 4 threads threaded correctly but now it is easy. The one area that was difficult was changing the needles out. I broke one and the area is very cramped to get 2 needles and stubby fingers in. I still have alot of things to learn - how to use all functions- but am pleased with my serger A good valye for the money.
