Banyans are a great pair of sunglasses for running

I was looking for a pair of wrap around sunglasses to wear when running. The objectives of the glasses were to 1) block some of the bright Southern California sun, 2) block the wind from getting to my eyes, 3) not bounce as I ran, and 4) stay up on my nose as I got sweaty during the run.
Based on the fact that the Ho'Okipa model was recommended by Maui Jim as a sunglasses that was designed for running, I bought a pair.
Right away, I could tell that they were a bit wide for my somewhat narrow face. Once outside and running, I found the fit to be superb as far as blocking the sun, not bouncing, and staying up on my nose. However, I did find that any small breeze snuck by either the outside or bottom of the lenses to the extent that I found my eyes watering as I ran.
I quickly tired of this and decided to do some further research. I found that Maui Jim made a similar model, Banyans, that was designed to fit a narrower face and, in addition, had lenses that were both taller (deeper) and wrapped further around the face than the Ho'Okipas. So I ordered a pair. They were great. They did everything the Ho'Okipas did (blocked the sun, didn't bounce, & stayed up on my nose when sweaty), plus they blocked the wind excellently.
BTW, I bought the Blue Hawaii lenses with the 2.50 reader option. The readers are great for my older eyes and allow me to see the small text on my running watch easily. If you choose to order readers with yours, be sure you check with your eye doctor to make sure that the reader power you order matches your need. My actual need was for 2.75, but since that was not available, I had to make do with 2.5. It's hard to tell the difference.

Temple Tips Pop Out and Yank Your Hair Out
on September 4, 2025

I loved these when I first got them, but the tips of the little rubber inserts on the stems pop out after a while. These get caught on your hair when taking your sunglasses off and it's really annoying. Very disappointed that this happens with such a high quality product. Just a bad design on these. Would not recommend because of that. Otherwise, great sunglasses.

Dissapointing!

I was very pleased with these glasses (ordered with prescription lenses) until they started to self destruct after 2 months. Stress cracks in the lenses have developed where the arms and bridge connect.
Note: use is typical and fairly low impact... driving, beach, boating, and fishing.

Banyan Sunglasses for Tennis
on January 15, 2026

Maui Banyons were the closest model to the Rock Crushers I had. These are for outdoor tennis, which I will not be playing until April, so I cannot rate comfort or ability to stay in place until then.

Love My Banyans!
on January 16, 2026

I love my Banyans, probably the best rimless sunglasses out there for sunny bright days. I would heartily recommend this style of sunglasses. I do a lot of driving and these are terrific. The lens seems to ‘cup’ my eyes so no stray light creeps around the edges of the lens. Perfect. And the Polaroid Plus 2 technology is a superior grade I want to protect my eyes from the harsh vagaries of the sun. Nuff Sed! Now if I can find them in Rose, that would be cool. I have to go to another MJ frame to get That Rose tint. Great on Cloudy days and compliment my green golf HT lenses.

Mine almost 14 years old and can't fault them

I just realised I purchased mine in 2012, they're still going strong. I'm a FIFO worker and used them in temps as high as 50*C (it was 79*C on the tarmac) as well as -15*C in the high country.
My job involves driving long distances on occasion and these by far are the best road glasses I've ever used, the polarisation makes the bitumen matte black.
Once again, very impressed, only writing this review now as I was in the desire of new sunnies as I couldn't remember the last time I purchased these. Found my old receipt from August 2012 🪄
I also got one of the fattest head in human history and they fit perfectly.

Comfortable fit and broad glare coverage
on March 7, 2026

The Banyans feel like a custom design, fitting neatly into my facial contours and minimizing side infiltration of glare. They are sturdy and lightweight, and do not shift with wind, sweat, or sudden movement. The Banyans replace my original pair of Maui Jims from over 20 years ago, and I could not be more satisfied with them. The sleek, magnetic carrying case is also a welcome innovation.

Love the Banyan's!

Love the new glasses. Value, craftsmanship, lens quality especially clarity are all top notch! I do have one little knock that I'm taking one star away for. If I could take just a half star, I would. The screws on either side of the bridge (top left of the right lens and the reverse on the left lens) create two little black dots in my periferal view that I thought I'd become accustomed too by now. I haven't. I would still recommend the glasses even with that!
