Clean, sharp edges - exactly what I was looking for!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently completed a project in my bathroom: an art deco design on the walls which required clean, sharp edges and many right angled corners. The plastered walls are slightly uneven ('knockdown' finish) and had been painted in semi-gloss white last summer.
I had never tried Edge Lock masking tape, but had seen tv commercials and decided to give it a go. It was easy to apply and easy to remove - it was on the walls for a total of 4 days. Due to the plaster finish on the walls, there were a few leaks in places, but far fewer than would have been the case with any of the other masking tapes that I have used in the past, and they were easy to remedy with white semi-gloss applied with an artist's paintbrush.
The tape came off very cleanly: it didn't tear and didn't stretch the paint or pull it off. The lines are perfect. I was very impressed, and will only use Edge Lock masking tape for my future painting projects, no matter how simple or complicated they may be.

Smear paint inside taped area

After spending more than an hour putting on the tape before painting the stripes in my son's bedroom, the result was horrible with paint smearing almost entirely along the edges of the tape. It doesn't seem to have the edge lock function, wonder if I got the substandard/rejected product. What a disappointment, a supposedly interesting project turned out to be a failure, wasted time, energy and money!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Scotch Edge-Lock tape did everything as promised on website, there was no paint lifting and paint seeping under the edge of the tape. Makes job much easier and less time consuming.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I usually buy Frog tape for painting but decided to try 3M's Edge Lock for a change and was amazed at how much better it was. It was much easier to apply, less likely to get tangled, much stickier than frog tape and came off like a dream. Thanks so much for a great product!

THIS TAPE SAYS EDGE LOCK. WRONG. JUST WRONG. THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT THIS TAPE THAT IS EDGE LOCK. I AM MAD THAT I DIDNT REALIZE IT UNTIL I FINISH PAINTING MY ENTIRE ROOM. THIS ENDING UP WITH MY HAVING TO DO MY ENTIRE ROOM OVER HAVING TO PURCHASE ANOTHER 60 DOLLARS WORTH OF PAINT.

Give me back my old tape please

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Ok...thought about not bad mouthing a tape that has been my faux painting friend for years, but I have to. I have found the new version of the tape unrolls more difficultly with curling and an annoying stickiness . I have had more problem with bleeding than I ever had before. Maybe I try to challenge the edge lock, but I don't think so, because generally I am painting for others and despise cleaning up after myself.
I still think the 3M products are the best, because I have tried the other "edge-lock" products and found them to be just like this new one.

not getting clean edges with this product

I have a lot of previous experience in the automotive refinishing industry and have probably applied miles of your 3M automotive masking tape to vehicles over the years and always had good success with your products.
I was dubious about your advertising claims shown on tv commercials with amazing results using the Scotch Blue tape in household masking applications. My own recent experience with this product has been less than satisfactory. I couldn't see how any masking tape applied over typical brush marks and common irregularities found in even the best interior painted surfaces could prevent the leakage underneath the tape, which seems to be the main challenge of getting clean lines.
My own results sure do confirm my suspicions and I also found that the tape doesn't really stick that well anywhere.

The ScotchBlue™ Painter´s Tape Delicate Surface with Edge-Lock 2080-EL is indeed recommended for faux painting applications including striping jobs where the surface is smooth and has been painted over 24 hours before applying the tape. We would expect this product to perform and leave clean paint lines. We also offer ScotchBlue™ Painter´s Tape Advanced Surface with Edge-Lock 2093-EL for textured or irregular surfaces. With both products we would expect a good clean paint line as long as it was applied as recommended. If this was the case and the results were not what you expected we would ask you please contact us 800-494-3552 M-F 7:00 am to 6:00 pm CST for further assistance. Thanks again, and please know we will be contacting you directly.
