It not only adapts Displayport to HDMI, but it also translates the HDCP (High Density Content Protection) from the HDMI input on a monitor to DPCP (DisplayPort Content Protection) for a Displayport output. [Displayport-to-Displayport connections use the DPCP protocol to enable the output only when connected to a monitor. HDMI-to-HDMI connections use HDCP. Most Displayport outputs I've encountered are licensed for both DPCP and HDCP, and will work with any otherwise-adequate Displayport-to-HDMI passive adapter or cable. We had a piece of equipment with a Displayport output that would not work with an HDMI monitor because the the manufacturer of the source device had decided not to pay the extra licensing fee for HDCP compatibility. This adapter provided the necessary translation for the Displayport output to handshake with the HDMI monitor input.]
