Great drive, great price, great reputation

Bought two of these for my first PC builds in over 20 years. I used WD Caviar hard disk drives back then, and they never let me down. So, I went straight for WD to build my kids' gaming PCs. ASUS ROG STRYX with NVIDIA 4060Ti. Loaded Win11 without a hitch., Drives have been flawless.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Do NOT make this your boot drive.

For people who have this drive randomly disappear: It is due to flushing issues. This drive CANNOT handle sustained/heavy workloads (like gaming with a lot of asset streaming). You will be fine most of the time, but expect this drive to surprise you one day. This is an issue esp If you run a game (for example, an ARPG or MMO) for a good number of hours. Ever reboot your PC and the drive is gone, only to show up later randomly? Yep. This happens to me too, and it drove me crazy trying to figure out what was going on. THIS is why a DRAM cache is important for gaming. Don't let random reddit comments convince you otherwise. Twice over this drive's 6 month life span, it has randomly disappeared. It was also a massive pain to initialize the drive in the first place. I rarely write reviews, and I don't have an affinity for any particular brand, so i'm not just hating on WD Black. Just hoping this comment can help someone. Check eventviewer once this happens, and look for issues with cache flushing. This is not an isolated incident. Thankfully my OS is on a different drive, and this one is "just" for games and other apps.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Disk unknown, not initialized, unallocated space

I use this in a M.2 NVMe enclosure to clone my drive, but the computer will not recognize the drive. Searched the internet all over to find solution and none works. Until I read the WD solutions and this one works:
Disable the ability for the computer to turn off the USB Root Hub to save power:
Access Device Manager.
For instructions, please refer to Answer ID 11635: Windows: Accessing Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
Right-click on USB Root Hub
Choose Properties
Select the Power Management tab
Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK to save the changes. Repeat for all remaining USB Hubs
Restart the computer
If the device is still not recognized, undo the changes by Checking the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power for all USB hubs
After saving the changes, Restart the computer.
Thanks WD!!!

I am at an end. Drive will not show up anywhere to initialize or partition. Not in bios nowhere, my old 500gb will, but not this one. Yes, installed correctly, bios up to date, yes compatible slot. I am assuming at this point that it is defective on delivery. I will most likely be going to a different manufacturer at this point.

will not post, with two nvme's

Drive will not post when other drives are present. I have an existing SN770 and it will only post in slot 3. I have tried in my other computer, this computer has two existing SN750 drives. If I remove one and replace with this drive nothing posts. I believe the drive is good, I was able install by itself and it posted in the bios, I was able to install Manjaro Linux on it with out issue, but only in slot 3. My system is ASRock z370 professional gaming I7, Intel I7 8700k, 32bg of Ram and an nvidia 1080.

Ive ALWAYS bought WD caviar black drives for every mac I've owned since 1999, never once had any fail in any way- I run them hard 24/7 as I never shut my computer off, and after about 18 months-2 years I retire the drive as a backup and install a new cloned drive.
Now I switched to a home built Linux box and installed a WD black m2 drive, works great, I decided to get a crucial m2 for an external USB for backups, but I couldnt get the thing to work right, when it was finally recognized I had problems transferring files to it, in frustration I yanked it out and broke it in half and tossed it, and bought another WD black m2, it came to-day, was immediately recognized and files transferred to it flawlessly, should never have bought that other brand, won't ever again!
