I tend to buy a shaver based on the size, location and quality of the attached trimmer. In my opinion the actual shaver foils tend to take care of themselves. In this case the series 5 hits it out of the park. Great trimmer on the device. Better than the series 7 in my opinion becuase its more full sized and as wide as the foil blades. I like to start by running the trimmer all over my face to knock the hairs down and than use the foil shaver to finish it up. Great shaver for those of us who's hair grows unevenly on there face.

Just got this shaver recently, having used Panasonic previously. My dad had bought a basic Braun a few years ago, then after he passed, I became its owner. It was pretty good, so I thought a newer and better model was in order. I'm very pleased with the 550 so far, and the clean & renew station handles its chores just as well. The shaver seems to give an overall closer shave than my Panasonic did. Another reviewer gave poor marks to the longevity of the replacement blades. This worries me...but I guess I'll see if he's right when the time comes. The cleaning cartridges will be an extra expense, but I'll try to use them sparingly.

I love the way this razor cuts long hairs laying down hairs stubborn hairs , it gets them all. I've never had an electric razer so perfectly efficient. This razor does not tear the hairs at all , it cuts so smoothly that you don't even fell it. It is simply the best electric razor i've ever had. The cleaning,charging and lubricating station that it comes with is an added bonus. Thanx Braun

Have been a rotary head shaving person my whole life and was given the 565-cc4 as a present. In just two days, I'm experiencing the best shaves I've ever had! Thought there would be a long adjustment period, but due to the excellent German engineering, this shaver gets as close a shave as a razor! This is an excellent product, excellent value and excellent quality product worthy of your consideration, especially if you are switching from a rotary shaver. Trust me, you will love this shaver! Enjoy!!!

Series 5 compared to Norelco

Does not give as close a shave as my old Norelco. Needs new cutting head about twice per year: very expensive to own. Does not hold shavings well so you have to brush and clean after each shave and clean up the shavings that escape while shaving. Now I need to replace the cutter again and the price is out of sight

The Braun Series 5 works very well on my course and very heavy beard. Allow 30 days for your beard to adjust to the new style of shaving if you are switching from lather/manual blade shaving. I really appreciate the 3 shaver head settings. Works as advertised.

The Braun 550 did not meet my expectations in the following areas:
-Poor shave quality, worse out of the box than my current linear shaver model from another manufacturer, with a dull 4 year old cutter.
-High vibration, barely tolerable for the duration of a quick shave
-Sideburn trimmer is at an awkward angle and doesn't cut well
-The supplied travel case is very bulky. The competition supplies a fitted plastic cap that protects the foil without adding bulk in my suitcase.
-The foil does not pop off easily for manual cleaning, for those of us who chose not to use the giant base station

On the plus side, I was pleased to see that corded operation was possible, and it is possible to not use the base station. The noise level was higher than desired, but better than the incumbent. Outcome: I returned this product, and will not be considering other Braun shvers.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
