Not worth the money!

The Total Gym is good for the upper body but any lower body exercises I do seems to hurt my knees. Don't be fooled by the pack of different workout cards you get…..they basically are all the same exercises and it is very easy to get bored. I don't hate this piece of equipment I just don't think it is worth the money!!!!
Pros: Easy To Set Up, Quiet, Easy To Use
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

First, when I got the box it said it was completely assembled. Nooooooooo it wasn't. And the direction are somewhat confusing on how to do complete the set-up.
Second. If you have knee problems, like myself, unless it is set up high, which requires a lot of arm and length strength to use, you will have a hard time getting up and down on this machine.
Third. You need arms like a gorilla to reach everything from where your seat is. And when you are in your sixties, as I am, (And at one point I was into weights and over exercising) and not exercised for a while, you need to keep it on the lowest of settings or your muscles complain most loudly.
Maybe, if I can get used to it, it will work, but it definitely not for beginners, and I think I paid way too much money for what I have received. I considered returning it, but getting it out of the box destroyed the box, and I can't afford the shipment to return it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Toss-up between Excellent and Good

First, the glide board is fun; I like the smooth gliding movement. This XLS comes virtually complete with everything needed for a comprehensive workout. I highly recommend it. Though, the Total Gym does have its flaws. Most of the flaws are manageable; Meaning you can work around them, for the most part. Some of the flaws take some personal usage adjustments to control their influence on a workout. Will explain the flaws shortly.
The PROS:
I typically do not like to be told what to do and how to do it when it comes to
exercise, but the "TRAINING DECK" must not be ignored! The training deck is a
5.5 X 8.5 roughly, set of instruction cards. This deck of cards explains usage of the
training deck and the Total Gym itself. The cards is formatted to include both words
and graphics that explain the exercise, and highlights the proper body form for
each. This training deck is arguable either as valuable as the Total Gym itself, or
maybe even more valuable then the machine. But, you really can't have one
without the other.
Safety features are built into the machine. Some of these safety features are the
hitch pins, and what I call "hook-clamps". The "hook-clamps" are used to secure
each resistant height level into place. The resistance level of the Total Gym is built
into the height adjustment. The Training deck explains this. Rubber stops restrict
the glide-board to a range of travel. You know, so the glide-board does not slide off
the bottom of the rails.
There are metal guards attached to the underside of the glide-board, at
each of the four corners. These guards appear to limit the possible derail of the
glide-board. See, the glide-board glides because it has flange wheels attached to
its underside. These flange wheels turn on the rails. If the glide-board derails, the
metal guards help restrict the glide-board from tilting off the rails.
The Ab-crunch is also a good attachment.
The Cons:
As stated above, the Training Deck is invaluable, but could include more detailed.

Can skip this section:
Now, before continuing, let me give a little background about me. For perspective
on how I look at things. Have to include this because most people do not see what
I do. Which means, this may not even affect your usage of the total gym. At the
onset of my technical career, virtually all professors commented that companies
are looking for people that can think outside the box. Well, because of my nature, I
took that too excess. Not only can I think outside of the box, but I spend most if not
all of my time their. I live outside the box. The positive side is the fresh, new and
exciting innovative ideas that populate everything I see and touch. I mean
Everything! All of the ideas are practical. The down side is putting people off. To
make this short; had to learn a better way to communicate.
Back to the Total Gym.
The Training Deck could have a separate card(s) of the human anatomy. Each
muscle can be color coded and/or numbered. As an example of usage:
When working on "EXERCISE 7 BACK," with the color code, the user has a
mental picture of the back muscle. The benefits are two fold; The arm muscles are
inadvertently working, but the focus should be on feeling the particular color, the
specific back muscle(s) for this exercise.
The metal guards. If the user force is unbalance, the glide-board will side shift
enough where the metal guard will cause the glide-board to stop short, preventing
full range of motion. A possible, low cost but effective, fix, could be to introduce a
metal plate with spring properties, that will align the metal guards as the glide-
board slides between the upper and bottom rails.
The oval squat stand should be larger. The current size is contradictory to the
overall impression of the Total Gym. A 2 ft. by 2 ft. would be appropriate.
The fold up capability is good but much caution is needed not to severely pinch the
hands during operation. The fix would be to install hand grips to the glide-board
frame to avoid pinch.
Would write a comprehensive and thorough with manual like graphics, but this would take much more time.

It’s a great machine

Mines came with four dvds but only two work properly. I still have one that I never opened for fear it is freezing and skipping like the others. The machine itself is approx 90 lbs and that’s heavier than the newer models, but I can’t get another total gym at this time. Having a designated area to leave it open would be great but I have to put it up after each use. So, consider the pounds before purchasing.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Not for Tall People

I'm tall with long arms. The instructional videos tell you how and where to sit on the bench but that doesn't work for me. I have to experiment to find the right position. also I am not able to get the full extention of the exercise.
Cons: Uncomfortable, Hard To Use
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
