Crappy UX by Design

From the spec and visually, this monitor is appealing given a very good deal. However, the UX is significantly downgraded by LG Switch:
1. The thunderbolt 5 port gets stuck super easily in a failure state for long when a TB4 or lower level cable is plugged in after LG Switch is installed. Even a live agent may not provide precise instructions to recover but suggests to return. How professional! 2. The right way to recover is to unplug everything, press and hold the power joystick for 20s or so, and then wait for longer than 15 mins for a full reset without a guarantee 3. The FW update definitely requires setting to USB Selection > USB-C and use the bottom right host port with a USB-C cable. USB A to C is totally unnecessary but suggested in the update description. So fun to baffle customers to say.
TB5 should never fail but behave gracefully despite user cable varieties. That is unfortunately not the case to expect. The FW update process only adds more confusion. The combination of both simply create crappy UX by design. What a masterpiece!

We always aim to provide a seamless user interface alongside our hardware designs, so we take your notes on the LG Switch software performance and installation process seriously to help our engineering teams enhance future updates. For the connection status when handling various cable setups, we recommend ensuring that any attached Thunderbolt hardware uses a fully certified, active Thunderbolt 5 cable to maintain stable communication with the host ports. For firmware updates via the application, verifying the USB Selection menu matches your exact port connection before initializing the setup process ensures proper data transmission. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The LG UltraFine 40U990A-W has been a strong upgrade to my workflow as a software engineer. The 5K2K resolution gives me plenty of space for coding and content creation, and the curved design keeps everything easy to see. The built-in KVM switch is especially helpful since I switch between work and personal devices often. I love the white finish, the metal stand, the amount of ports, and how well the LG Switch app fits into my setup.
A few things I didn’t enjoy: the fan noise is louder than expected and always on, the cable-management hole sits too low and shows the cables, and I wish there were a software way to switch inputs. Still, it improves my day-to-day workflow.

Great display but issues with Thunderbolt devices!

Upgraded to this model from a 40 Inch Curved UltraWide® 5K2K Nano IPS Monitor with Thunderbolt™ 4 Connectivity (model 40WP95C-W) which I used as external monitor for my 15" LG Gram laptop (model 15Z95P). Unfortunately unlike old monitor above, this new monitor is not compatible with my LG laptop using a single Thunderbolt 5 cable for video and power connection as my LG laptop only supports Thunderbolt 4 and this new monitor is apparently not backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4 devices. Disappointing for this price point and excellent in all other aspects.

Hi. Thank you for sharing your experience with your new LG Monitor. We appreciate the clear detail you provided about upgrading from your previous LG UltraWide model and that your new unit doesn’t support a single‑cable Thunderbolt connection with your LG Gram due to Thunderbolt 4 compatibility. We understand that while Thunderbolt 5 is designed with high-speed data and power delivery in mind, certain hardware handshakes between older Thunderbolt 4 hosts and newer Thunderbolt 5 peripherals may require updated firmware to initialize properly. One troubleshooting step you can try is to ensure your LG Gram has the latest BIOS and Intel Thunderbolt Controller drivers installed through the LG Update Center or the LG Support Website To allow us to properly investigate the details of your specific product model and to see how we can assist with your Thunderbolt‑compatibility issue being encountered, please send us an email at lgdigitalcare@lg.sprinklrsupport.com if you need further assistance. ^James
The fan issue was mostly resolved by the most recent firmware update. And the LG switch app is very handy.
It would be great if there are more split screen options, or provide us a way to monitor/control the fan speed.

Hello! We appreciate you sharing your experience with your LG Monitor and how the latest update and the LG Switch app have been working for you. I like the monitor but the support for it is not there yet. My main comuters that I use it for mac book m4 16 inch pro only recognizes 100hz no 120hz. Also the display at native resolution is broken so I have to use 3360 x 1418. I am using the latest macos 26.3. Same issue with my ubuntu machine, it recognizes the full 120 hz but the scaling is broken. Windows 11 support looks better but I only use windows when gaming and this is not supposed to be a gaming monitor. Other than that the documentation and the driver support from lg is lacking, I don't know how to connect all the devices correctly what what is what on the back since there is no detailed documentation.

Hello. Thanks for sharing your experience with your LG Monitor. It’s helpful to hear how you’re using it across macOS, Ubuntu, and Windows, and you’ve highlighted some important points about refresh rates, scaling, and documentation. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Review submitted as part of a program that provides a purchase discount. As a content creator, the LG 40U990A-W has become the most valuable upgrade in my workspace. The 40-inch 5K2K display gives me room to edit videos, review photos, script content, and manage emails all at once without clutter or constant tab-switching. The Nano IPS Black panel delivers deep contrast and accurate colors, which makes editing so much easier and more reliable. Thunderbolt 5 with 96W charging is a game changer; I connect my laptop with one cable and my entire setup is ready. Setup took minutes, and the sleek design instantly elevated my desk aesthetic. What surprised me most is how much smoother my workflow feels this monitor genuinely boosts productivity. It looks exactly like the product photos but feels even more premium in person. I use it daily for editing, planning, and reviewing brand content, and it fits perfectly into my routine. For creators who want more space, clarity, and efficiency.

LG 5K2K is AWESOME!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m using the LG 40 inch UltraFine for video editing, creative work, and daily productivity. The 5120 by 2160 5K2K resolution feels like two monitors in one and gives me enough room to split apps into three sections or four quads. For editing, having a wide timeline with previews and tools above it has been a big upgrade.
I chose this monitor for a true single cable workspace, and Thunderbolt 5 delivers with power, fast data, and access to everything on my desk. Setup was an interesting challenge only because the screen is large, but still easy to handle. The built in hub works better than expected. The Ethernet port is solid, and with an adapter I can even use my full 2.5 gig speeds.
I use it daily. It matches what LG advertises, cleans up my desk, and improves my workflow. If you want more space with fewer cables, it’s an easy recommendation.

This LG monitor is an excellent investment!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This LG monitor is an incredible part of my setup now. I'm a photographer who edits on a laptop. I was having issues with my previous monitor (different brand, 32in), so I decided to go big for my next one. Out of the box, it was simple to put together and feels very well built. The instructions for the cable placement confused me at first, but I used the Thunderbolt 5 cable LG included and it works like a dream! The only issue I found was it flickering when it returned from sleep mode at first. I realized that the refresh rate is set to 120 Hertz by default so I switched it to variable 48-120 Hertz and have not had any issues since. I have it set to sRGB as well for editing consistency. Also, the dock-like ports under the screen are so convenient. Being able to plug in just the one cable to my laptop and have my whole setup ready to edit with incredible detail is a 10/10. I’m very happy with this monitor! [Review submitted as part of a program that provides a purchase discount.]

Hi Angelina, thank you for sharing your detailed experience with the LG 40U990A-W UltraFine™ 5K2K Nano IPS Black Monitor. It’s great to hear how Thunderbolt™ 5 connectivity and the dock‑like ports have streamlined your editing workflow, and that sRGB mode is giving you the consistency you need for photography.
For the flickering after sleep mode, you’ve already taken a strong step by adjusting the refresh rate. In addition, try: • Ensuring Dynamic Contrast is set to Off in the Picture settings. • Checking that your graphics drivers are fully updated.
