I have the F404204 and the instructions state to use this filter under the one that came with the hood for ductless. However there is no way both of them will fit. I left just this one by itself. I hope it functions properly.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Filter dimensions have changed about an inch in each direction since the older range hoods in the same model number series. Not enough to be a useful form factor change, just enough to stop selling filters compatible with the older models.

The charcoal filter won't work with the Broan F40000 because the filter that comes with it is 1/8" thick and this is 3/8" it doesn't fit under the plastic clip. If you force it under the clip the fan blades can't move. Therefore, the F40000 is not a convertible hood for non-venting because you can't put a filter on it, so why would you use it. What a waste of money
