ER10...Everyone should carry one of these

A very capable, useful piece of equipment that can be appreciated by so many, and used in so many different fields. The backpacker, the adventurer, the prepper, the student and even the homebodies out there.
To complement their emergency line of products, Midland USA have introduced the ER210’s newer and littler sibling…the ER10 Emergency Alert AM FM Weather Radio.
The ER10 is small in general size compared to the ER210. It may have a few less features but it is by no means a less capable radio. It retains the brilliant NOAA National Weather Alert system, clock, AM/FM radio frequencies, LED Flashlight with Hi/Lo/Strobe capability, a headphone jack and the easily seen bright red case coloring. It is powered by 3 AA batteries (included). The crank option and rechargeable battery option on the ER-210 are omitted but it allows the ER10 to be considerably smaller and more compact. The ER10 will fit easily into a purse, coat or backpack pocket and even in a cargo pant pocket. Radio reception is on par with the bigger ER-210 and the user interface is the same, making transitioning from one radio to the other a breeze. Its size is reminiscent of the little transistor radios from when I was a young boy (many years ago).
I would occasionally carry the ER-210 during my trips out of town, just in case something happened and I would need vital safety information. Since receiving the ER10, I find myself carrying and using it daily. Its smaller size is a bonus and its features are equally enjoyable as the bigger ER-210, so much that I now leave the ER-210 packed in my emergency communication hard case along with the Midland USA GXT1000VP4 radios, ready for the next power outage/disaster.
The ER10 should be an everyday carry item for everyone. Mobile phones are now so much a part of everyday life but their form, function and infrastructure can be fragile in so many ways. Having local news and local emergency weather information available and at hand is often ignored or dismissed. Carry one of the brilliant little ER10 Emergency Alert AM FM Weather Radios with you and when that moment we all hope doesn’t happen, happens…..you’ll be glad you have it with you.

Initial impressions was good. The product showed up and I appreciated that the AA batteries were included. I messed with a bit in the house just to try the functions, please note that I do live in a rural mountain town. The radio is fairly easy to navigate. The flashlight is a nice feature although a bit bulky since it is on the end of the unit. Weather channels came in nicely as did the FM/AM stations (at least as good as any do here). I put the radio in my day pack to go hiking a few days later and up the mountain I went. When I stopped to refill water, I decided to test out the radio. To my disappointment the included batteries had died even tho I had only used the product briefly at home. With new batteries I ventured out on another trip. The unit worked great!! I scrolled thru the weather channels and had good reception on more than one. I also enjoyed some FM radio on my hike in the backcountry of New Mexico. The unit is light weight and I didn't notice it in my pack. The only functional drawback I found is that the buttons do bump on fairly easily. Overall, good product but get your own batteries.

Handy little tool to have in the bag

I wasn't sold on having a device just for the weather as I could get that on my handheld ham radio while out on trips but I was wrong. This little thing made it east to find the weather station in the area I was camping in over the weekend. All I had to do was cycle through the 5 preset weather channels and the right station popped up in no time. Would have taken a LOT longer the old way I used to do it. Other features such as the radio and the flashlight are nice to have as well although may not be used as much. A backlit display would be nice but that would probably put too big a drain on an already short-ish battery life. It will be in my gear box going forward!

Pros: Weather Alerts, Compact Size, Digital Tuning, Bult-in flashLight, Strong reception of NOAA Weather Channels, Headphone Jack, multi power sources;solar, hand crank, or USB charge with included cord.
Cons:AM Band Reception seems weak.
I had the opportunity use and review the Midland ER50 Emergency Alert AM/FM Weather Radio. The radios compact size is its best feature, making it ideal for backpackers or anyone else who needs a compact weather radio. The digital tuning is both easy and intuitive to use. I found the reception of the NOAA weather bands and FM bands to be better than I was expecting. I was a little disappointed with the AM radio. The radio has a handy built in LED light (On / Bright / Flash). I would not rely upon this as a primary flashlight, but it is perfect in a pinch. It has a carrying wrist cord. This ultra-compact AM/FM/Weather Alert Radio is perfect for the leisurely camper, or hiker.

This little unit makes a lot of sense when you're out in the woods - especially if you're alone. The WX stage seems to pull in NWS radio stations well, although you don't want to try while you're charging your phone nearby. It can create interference that can make it tough to receive a good WX signal. The AM/FM works well, and I can overlook the less-than-optimum sound quality; it is, after all, an emergency radio - and a small one at that. The LED could be a bit brighter, but again, when you really need some light, it will do well. I personally like the fact that it runs on AA batteries; I can keep spares in my pack and don't have to worry about cranking before I can hear the weather forecast. Nice for the price.

The smaller brother to the ER210 but with the all same great features. It’s small enough to put in your pants pocket or easily carry with you on a hike. It's powered by 3 (AA) batteries compared to the rechargeable battery of the ER210. It has a great sounding speaker and also comes with a headphone jack. Its a great "compact" edition to your emergency preparedness supplies.

Working as a full-time photographer in the outdoor industry requires that I know weather conditions at all times. Whether this is for pre-planning a photoshoot or knowing what I need to do for shelters while camping.
The ER10 is the perfect sized emergency radio to toss into a pack and forget about until you need it. The added bonus of the flashlight & readily available AA Batteries are a nice touch too!

I received this a couple weeks ago. It will be handy to have while out traveling around. Will alert you to emergency weather situations in your area. Also has AM and FM tuner, pulse 7 NOAA weather stations. Has a handy flashlight and a strobe if you need help. It's small and light, has a clock, a lanyard, and telescopic antenna. Sound quality isn't the best, but for the price and security of knowing about the weather it's very handy.
