I use this as an external HDD holder for 2 12TB. I am consolidating my video collection from various older HDD's. On occasion this involves using the adapter for old Serial HDD's.
I have two of these units, one for each laptop and they are reliable. I haven't tried the clone feature yet as I am still coping everything to my new HDD's. Once I have the masters done, then I'll clone them so I'll always have a back up.
But my biggest complaint is the transfer speed for a unit that is supposed to be 10GB. Nowhere near it. I get avg 32-45 MB/s on a good day. Most of the time is 5-16 MB/s. It is more like a 2.5/3.0 transfer speed with the supplied short cables.
I have a Seagate 4TB & 5TB Backup Plus that gives 145+MB/s. That's because they are using the right cables (marked with Super USB (double SS) 10) . I believe they are type C and micro type B.
Startech needs to drastically update the connections in order to obtain the higher transfer speeds.

We sorry to hear that the dock is performing slower than expected, those speeds are definitely lower than normal. The included cable is able to provide the full speed the dock can maintain, and even though the dock is rated for 10Gb/s, SATA III, the fastest drive speed currently, can only do 6Gb/s at top performance. This is also heavily dependent on the drives you use as older spinning drives (Non-SSDs) may not consistently hit their full speed, or may be SATA II or SATA I which have a lower data rate. Also, running our dock through a hub or other devices may impact speed as well.
Since the speeds are not at where we expect them, we would like to hear more about your setup to troubleshoot the issue. 10 Gbps USB with new Mac mini

Just purchased this dock. It connects at 10 Gbps USB with my new Mac mini (Late 2018), as shown on "System Summary" ---> "USB". My two drives are WD RED SATA III, 2 GB each. Performance is great and much faster read/write than before. My 3 1/2 inch big, heavy disks could use better mechanical support though.

Not Gen 2 compatible

This dock does not work for me on USB 3.1 Gen 2. Works fine Gen 1. Tried two differsnt system that both support Gen 2 USB. If I plug into this port the activity light constantly flashes but the drive is never recognized. Yes, I am using the supplied cable.

Fast dock but missing cloning feature

I never would have guess that StarTech would have a dual dock without cloning functionality - but that's what this is. It's a very fast dock but lacking a crucial feature!

Reliable and fast

I bought one years ago and can't believe I am the first to review. It works flawlessly and I use it whenever I want to clone a drive. Can also boot from it if drive
is converted (it seconds) with the free Haslo WinTo USB. Click Tools, and use first option to convert.
