I bought this product about two weeks ago. The buttons do not work when I tried to set the clock, furthermore it does not run on batteries either.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

You are correct that there is only a battery backup for clock: requires 2 AA batteries (not included), it runs using the included AC/DC power adapter.

Exact features i wanted, terrible sound quality

I am looking for an alarm clock that will play chosen CD sound tracks so i can turn off my wifi and bluetooth while sleeping. This product did exactly what I needed! However, the music sounds like its in a tin can and is unpleasant :(
