Second unit that started making strange noises

Second unit I've purchased from costco that started making strange noises. The motor hums in and out and there is also a rattling noise.
I almost always kept it on low, every once in a while put it on level 2 so there is no reason for this to happen.
I had the same problem with a 270e and I returned it and this one is going back as well.
In addition the dust sensor on both units didn't work at all. I could kick up a pile of dust so thick i could see it and nothing happened. The smell sensor works fine.
Lastly, the filters on both units had a nasty smell coming from them that took days to dissipate. I needed an air cleaner for my air cleaner. Ridiculous.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I'm sorry to hear you've had 2 units start to make noise. Normally, our units have a < 1% chance of breakdown. So, it's sad to hear that you had two. We of course try to make the highest quality product possible. We found the best materials from around the world to build our units, and to hear you've had 2 with the same issue is distressing. I wish you would have contacted us before returning them. We would have been more than happy to replace those units.
As for the sensors, it can be quite confusing as to what they do. They are looking for increases in air particles, but when you "kick up a pile of dust" it might look like a lot, but the unit may only see a slight increase in air particles compared to what it can clean quickly. So, the system doesn't see it as a sustained amount of air particles. It just sees it as a slight uptick in air particles.
The filter odor is something we are working on. We aren't quite sure what people smell. We've tested the filters multiple times, but they always come back as negative for anything. This is also an incredibly rare issue. Last year we only had .008% of our filters come back with a complaint of an odor. Still, we'll keep experimenting and trying to fix the issue for everyone, because you are correct. No one should smell anything.

Awesome unit!

I had the 450E for over a year now, the unit still remain very silent and efficient as it was brand new. I leave my unit running 24x7, my allergy symptoms has been gone since I had the Blueair 450E, highly recommended.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Many things breaking

After two years of light use, the dust sensor does not work anymore. Smell sensor works. The fan does not spin as fast as it used to anymore. The motor hum has become loud! And the unit rattles from time to time.
Tried cleaning the filter recently with a vaccum cleaner and the dark foam side developed a hole.
Service is expensive!! What a low quality product!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It sounds like the sensors are clogged.
You’ll want to take a can of compressed air (like what one uses to clean a keyboard) and spray the sensors with 3-5 second bursts. The sensors are two circular array of holes on the side of the LED display, one will be arranged like a flower; the other, a circle. Note; this is the only way to clean the sensors as vacuuming will not work. One needs to push the particles on through the unit.

Big Help, No Worries

So, after trying to solve problems associated with allergy season, forced air furnace, and a roving pet by choosing other machines that promised the elimination of such bothers, I chose a Blue Air 450. Placed this model in the bedroom to help insure a good night's sleep without the worries from the causes cited above. Really, if you want some satisfaction provided by an exceptional performance machine that is so quiet you wont know it's working for you, go with the Blueair. Big help, no worries. Tom in the Kansas City metro

Very efficient

I received my air purifier as a gift two years ago and love it. It keeps the house much cleaner so I need to dust less often ( a job I'm not fond of), and it is wonderful for my allergies. I especially like that it is quiet so I can leave it running all the time. I highly recommend this to anyone with allergies.

Works well but noisy on highest setting

I needed an air purifier to deal with the smoke smell getting into my apartment from the one downstairs. After checking the reviews, I decided to try the Blueair 450E with SmokeStop filter in my bedroom. It works! I no longer smell smoke while the air purifier is running. It is rather noisy on its highest setting and woke me up a few times switching to that level while running on auto, but since its medium setting is much quieter I simply set it to that for overnight. (Since it doesn't have wheels I also put it onto a heavy-duty rectangular plant stand to make it easier to move when I'm vacuuming.) I'm very satisfied with this product -- it's great value for money.

I have had my 450E for almost 4 years. I have had other brands in the past, but this one is by far the best! The only problem I have ever had was the sensor wanted to run the fan on high all the time.  Not surprising sine I live in the dusty desert! I solved it by vacuuming the unit regularly and making sure the sensor was clean/clear of build-up. I use the manual adjustments and leave my unit on medium 24/7 most of the time anyways. Their customer service is excellent as well,
