Does not work with iPhone compatible headsets
on January 27, 2016
Posted by: Franz
Unfortunately there is no universal standard for which pin handles what in 3.5mm audio-cables. Different manufacturers use different pins for mic/line-out. This product is another one of my failed attempts to find an adapter suitable for my iPhone compatible headset. Not a faulty product per sey, I'm sure it works fine with other types of headsets (most Samsung compatible ones...)

Hello,
With 3.5mm headset connections there are currently two standards that manufacturers use. CTIA and OMTP. All StarTech.com TRRS audio cables, connectors, and adapters conform to the CTIA standard.
Unfortunately, most Apple headsets (earbuds or earpods) do not fully conform to the CTIA standard and may have issues working with our audio cables.
Have a look at our FAQ that explains this further and also shows a helpful pinout for the CTIA standard.
Thank You

Response from startech.comBy Joe S., Technical Support, February 25, 2014
Thanks for your feedback!
Some headsets such as the Beats, Monster, have specific resistance or pin out requirements for adapters. While our adapter is designed to work with most standard headset configurations, it's possible that this is the case here.
If you still have the adapter, would you be able to try it with another headset, such as from a smartphone and contact us at 1-800-256-1844 or support@startech.com

Works well once you sort out connectors
on March 19, 2017

The product works well once you sort out what goes where. Unfortunately, the two male connectors are indistinguishable from each other when in fact one is wired for Audio Out and the other for Mic. You just have to try it to see if it works; if it doesn't, swap them and it should. Fortunately, it's low voltage stuff, and in my case didn't seem to do any damage when I wired it wrong.
Suggestion: colour code the male connectors as per the audio standard (green for audio, pink for mic). Or, make the mic connector a two conductor mono connector, as I'm sure it actually is internally. Either one would allow the correct cabling to be sussed out.

Works

Works if you know what your doing. Works with PS4 compliant headsets.
Microphone channel does not work with headsets that have volume buttons, but stereo(left, right) channels work fine. This does not bother me as I don't intend to use this for that.

Hello,
There are currently two standards used for 3.5mm audio cables. CTIA and OMTP.
All StarTech.com TRRS audio cables, connectors, and adapters conform to the CTIA standard. Some OMTP audio devices can detect which pinout is being used and switch to the CTIA standard, but not all audio devices can do this.
It is possible that the headset(s) you have used with this adapter do not use the CTIA standard used by our cables, but instead use OMTP.
A pinout of the CTIA standard we use can be found in our FAQ.
I got what I expected in pefect conditions. Prompt delivery

Worked like butter

Ok, I bought one of those throat mic's that has the funky 3 ringed 3.5mm plug and just wanted to split that out to separate headphone/mic for my Windows computer to deal with. It worked perfectly as soon as I plugged it in and my life is just a little bit better for it....
