Complex thoughts

First of all, this is my first official review of a LEGO product, I have never had enough to say to write one before. This set, on the other hand, finally inspired me to write this. To get the easy stuff out of the way, yes, it’s too expensive. Yes, it should have come with the manual. Yes, the stickers look sloppy because the colors aren’t matched well. But my biggest concern here is with the build. Now, I’m not a professional or anything, but I’ve built a lot of sets in my time. And never in my life has a LEGO set had me scratching my head why they built something this way. Trust me when I tell you that building this thing is like a DnD campaign. You get an idea of what the result is supposed to be, but every step leaves you questioning how the heck you are supposed to get there. When you reach the end, you get a model that has unnecessary extensions to the base that make it harder to find space for, full of frankly weird building techniques and really fun Easter eggs. If you miss a step and have to go back, trust me, I did it too. The instructions have very little rhyme or reason, and some parts look unfinished. Honestly I think they just needed to quality control this one a tad more before sending it out. Some sections are flushed out and beautiful and some are just… exposed plate with no decor? It’s really quite odd. Also, there’s very little direction about how to pose things in this model, especially Cinderhowl the Red Dragon herself. The way that the 360 degree spin shows her placed on the tower is different than the way used on the box, and neither are that intuitive. We needed specific placement information in the instructions itself. I don’t regret buying this set, there’s enough here to really like, but as a LEGO enthusiast, I honestly believe you guys just sent this one to print a bit too quickly. The build is not up to the LEGO standard I have come to expect from you. The instructions are messy and lack a lot of clarity when it comes to model placement. The stickers don’t match the color of the pieces they are on. The minifigures and monster builds are excellent, and the Easter eggs and wealth of weapons and treasures found in this set are truly awesome. I just think you guys put way more effort into that than you put into the actual build. Thanks for reading!
(P.S. Here are some photos of the result of an hour of me trying to figure out how to set the dragon on the tower like the 360 spin video shows(the secret is the wings))

Great Build

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The concept is fantastic. Putting it together was a lot of fun. I am looking forward to playing the one-shot with it with my D&D group. The only drawback was that some of the instructions did not flow logically, like when you put the lizardman in the narrow doorway after the room was already completed; not an easy task with larger fingers. This difficulty was also experienced in other areas as well.

For a DnD mini campaign, I wasn't expecting so much content. I especially appreciate all the monsters. The Owlbear is my favorite. If this line continues and grows, I will certainly buy every product available to add to my LEGO DnD collection.

I genuinely love the set, I wish the figures included were based on those in the recent movie, but otherwise, I can't complain at all, the playability and aesthetic are fantastic, this might be the best dragon ever in a lego set, it's just a great set all around.

A Deceptive Dragon

Just wanna first say that I absolutely adore this set and would almost consider buying a second one. It’s a fair value for what is given and the build experience felt fun and honestly unique. However, once I got to building the dragon I realized the box, and the promotional images had kinda lied. It is nearly, if not completely impossible to pose the dragon *on* or around the tower. Which was something I was somewhat banking on for how I was hoping to display the set as a whole. Other than that one little issue, the set is still incredibly and as long as the buyer is aware of the dragons independence, I highly recommend it.
First off, the design is fantastic and I loved all the little touches, which made for a richly detailed finished set. The build wasn’t difficult, but it was challenging enough to keep me engaged and entertained throughout. Overall, this would have been a great set, however… there were about half a dozen pieces missing (mostly from the tavern). Through creativity (and raiding my childhood stash of bricks) I was able to complete the build, but it was really disappointing. I just wish the quality control had been better, especially considering the price point on this set.

This set is ridiculously overpriced for what you get. Fiddly build, not a lot of detail - not as polished as other sets with lower price points. The most recent modular buildings are much more detailed and such a better value compared to this set. Kind of wish I hadn’t gotten it. That said, love the D&D / medieval theme, and appreciated that you can swap out the minifig faces (although I don’t like the minifigs).
