One issue I strongly hope

I compared my XM4 with XM5, noticed that XM5 only have 100% noise cancelling when music is playing, while XM4 doesn’t have this issue, no matter music is playing or not, it gives NC 100%. I’m sure Sony put the new idea on the new NC program in XM5. For this point, I really don’t like it. I hope Sony can change back in the new version update or in the next generation. Beside this, when XM5 is output 100% NC ability, it is the best.

Adaptive ANC disappoints

Purchased this specifically for the ANC which was touted as an improvement on the XM4 and while it has the potential for this, the adaptive ANC has completely ruined the experience. Unlike its predecessors the adaptive ANC cannot be toggled on/off, and as a result you can't set it on the max ANC setting which is exactly what I was anticipating. Will be going back to my old headphones which cost half the price and had better ANC.

Not overawed

I have had this product for one day. I hoped this would be an exceptional product but on delivery, I was disappointed. Since placing my order for this product, I downloaded the app Flacbox to my iPhone 8 and loaded FLAC music into the iPhone in readiness for the delivery of the new headphones. I was surprised to find my 2020 Phonak Audeo M90-R BT hearing aids played this music with surprising clarity - much better than WH1000XM5B headphones. The hearing aids seem much more efficient in that the breathing of artists can be heard and the overall reproduction is much more alive and realistic - the Sony MX5 headphones has slightly better bass but in general, the sound seems muffled in comparison. A disappointment for me being a long time Sony customer - including purchasing a revolutionary (at the time) EL7 Elcaset in 1976. Why can't Sony produce its top shelf headphones with equivalent if not better performance than my Phonak hearing aids ? In Sony's defense, it should be noted that the Phonak hearing aids are much more expensive than the WH1000XM5B headphones. The control buttons need to be better visually identified. The MX5 headphones have the advantage over my hearing aids with its noise cancelling function eg when used in a vehicle or outdoors if subject to wind noise.

<<<< Sound Leak

Sound leak can be heard from a far distance (1-2m)even when it is near 50 in volume. Wasn’t expecting this and I am very disappointed in that area as I will be using these on public transport and do not want others to hear my music.
Also noise cancellation is not that good. I can hear a lot around me including cars and other background noise.
Overall sound quality is good and the ability to equalise how you want it to is good but the sound leak and noise cancellation does it for me.

Absolutely outstanding product with the most amazing audio features. I have been an audiophile most of my life and have never seen such quality. Not surprising coming from a reputable brand such as Sony. I will never need to buy another headset again. Thanks

Just bought this set as was going on a few international flights and it has been just amazing! Clear sound and cuts the noise extremely well. The covering the right ear cup for pass through is also genius.

Expected more

Bought a year ago and no longer pair with my devices. Also note the rounded headpiece can end up being quite sore when worn compared to flatter alternatives.

Flight Changing

Bought the XM5's a few weeks ago in preparation for another cross country work flight. Instead of taking my venerable Sony MD 7506's or Galaxy Buds Plus, the new XM5's are amazing. Jet engine noise? What noise. Shocked is an understatement. Anyway one of the flights was delayed from landing due to military training and the XM5's stayed on for 7 hours straight without discomfort. Industrial design is top class, clamp pressure is good, ear cups fit perfectly and are soft, headband feels light and the construction is very nice. Not sure how they breath but ears wern't sweaty after 7 hours. The app is 'ok' and I've turned off all the location features. Headphones work a treat.
