Failed Drives

I do not know hich drive has failed, but over the last two months, three of my four WD Red Drives in my MyCloud EX2 have failed, I have two 8TB NAS each running as raid 1. Still ordering a new drive and then allowing the NAS to rebuild is a pain. I have been using the EX2 Ultras for several years and maybe the disks are just wearing out. I do not know, but I ma a bit disappointed.,

Hello,

We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD Red Plus Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.

Based on your concern, if the drive is not showing up on the computer then it could be due to insufficient power supply to the drive for operation. To isolate the cause of the drive failure, it is recommended to connect the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer and check the drive for any damage or defect.

We recommend connecting the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer, to test the health of the drive using Western Digital Dashboard for Windows.

"Western Digital Dashboard: How to Install and Use"
https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/31759#subject2

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Poor packaging. My drive showed up in a box with the bubble balloons as I would call them and a piece of cardboard on each side of drive. Once drive was installed all I got out of it was clicking. The drive could not be formated or used so had to return due to defective.

Just a little glitch...

For some unknown reason, it crashed my Windows 10 system upon insertion (multiple times). The system is set up ACHI and I have been plugging and unplugging HDD all the time. For this time, I have to plug it into another Win 10 system to have it formatted before putting back into the original system for use. Strange.

Installed the drive and Windows 10 didn't recognize it. BIOS recognized the drive, but said it was 0.0GB. It's being replaced under warranty, so I will add another review when the new drive arrives.

My Experience with WD Red Drives
on December 24, 2021

I bought my first WD Red drives (CMR version) in 2014, and now it is the only drive I will use in my NAS and server devices. I purchased my first WD Reds to replace a rash of failed drives that were made by a different manufacturer. Now, when I am asked why I am set on WD Reds, I point out that every WD Red drive I have ever purchased still works. I have only replaced WD Red drives to upgrade for a larger capacity WD Red.
