I had wrongly assumed this Otter was constructed of non-slip material like my previous Otter but it is simply hard slippery plastic. I really don't understand why it is categorized as an Otter.

Sounds like you might have previously been using one of our Defender Series cases, as that model does have an outer synthetic rubber slipcover. In contrast to that robust case, the Symmetry Series is one of our most streamlined, and as such, we opted to go with the smooth finish in order to aid in the retrieval of one's device from pockets and such.
