The sound quality and volume of the speaker is outstanding. It picks up stations that are normally not available from other radios I have tried. This is one good radio for sure.
I bought the Tivoli because of it discriminator. It can fine tune any station and ignore the harmonics. I bought two - one upstairs and one down. However, after a year both tuners developed a scratching noise - like dust in the old capacitive tuners - except you can't clean it. The broadcast sound is rich and bold, about as good as a well known "wave radio". I now hate the tuner on this radio, but I use the auxillary input jack for other units and I love this radio. It is a handsome unit with a very nice wooden case. I am sure the wood helps with the sound.
This radio was purchased based upon the reviews praising the Model One's FM reception. It has replaced a Boston Acoustic modelthat had a great FM receiver but developed many issues and in the final analysis was way overpriced and unreliable. The ModelOne's FM reception is as good as all the favorable reviews claim if you use the external FM antenna (provided). The AM is receptionis OK from the limited amount I have listened to (ball games) and there is an optional AM antenna that can be attached to improvethe reception. The sound quality is surprisingly good at both high or low volumes for such a small radio (physical size is small too--- about 2/3rds the size of a shoebox) but, a tone adjustment for bass/treble would be a nice feature as I found the bass a little too booming for my taste at medium to high volume (where I tend to have it set as a shop radio). Also, while it is possible to play an iPod or other device thru this radio, it would be nice there was a direct connect to an iPod or a USB connection. Accessories like an iPod or a portable Satellite radio can be connected with a cable that has 2 @ 3.5mm male ends under their own battery power. A headphone jack is also present and will play stereo even though the radio itself plays mono.I am pleased with the Model One's FM performance as it picks up a hard-to-get PBS station I like to listen too (Bose Wave get way too static by comparison) and it has reasonable fidelity so it is pleasant to listen to. 5 stars 'coz it does what I wanted!on most radios/receivers.
I bought this for my Dad, who liked listening to radio, but due to his poor eyesight, couldn't deal with 75 buttons that comes with other manufacturers. He enjoyed this radio and got used to turning it off or changing the station even when is lying down and without getting up to turn on nightstand lamp. It has very small amber colored led, which does not bother at night even if you leave it on. Forget about it being mono, the sound quality is deep and exceptionally good.I bought it for my Dad so he can enjoy it, and he did for several years. You cannot put a price on that.
