I bought Premium twice because I didn't understand each version's capabilities. I have 2 partnerships and my personal taxes. I originally purchased Premium because it said it would handle K-1's. I didn't realize at the time that I needed the Business version to actually create the K-1's. The Business version is not as refined and the interview process lacks detail. The premium version guided me through doing my personal taxes including my own business (Schedule C) but I couldn't file electronically until the software updated on April 3, and that update was related to K-1's. So confusing. I purchased Premium by itself, and then when I had to purchase Business, it also came with Premium. Next year, I'll just purchse Business with Premium.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought this software in November so I could do year end tax planning. However, so many of the critical forms and tax law changes were not incorporated, even though the software was for sale then. There were no warnings and no disclaimers about the missing forms when I first bought this software. The software began to be usable in January, long after I could make any meaningful tax moves. I had to instead rely on using freetaxusa in November and December to try to make the best tax moves before year's end.
Pros: Fast
Cons: Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

IN DOR not satisfied with electronic data detail

For the second year in a row, the Indiana Department of Revenue has required me to submit additional documentation beyond what the H&R Block state package for Indiana submitted electronically. The IN DOR requires that I submit a hard copy of the Federal 1040, along with backup documentation regarding Schedule C.
Cons: Hard to prepare

why is the program telling me that I dont know my own mothers name? Also, my wife died in January 2024 and the IRS has her death certificate but yet I got rejected because they say her information is wrong....the program says her information is deleted but the IRS rejected for that reason

The H&R Block tax software does a good job with both the federal and state tax returns. With rental income, it would be difficult for me to do my own taxes without it. There are a few reasons it gets only 3 stars. The software leaves some parts of certain schedules and worksheets for you to figure out on your own such as AMT calculations, or some of Schedule E tables when the passive loss limitation applies. For CA State, it helps even less with the Schedule E tables. With the expansive and changing tax laws, this is not unexpected, especially with the state programs. With the new AI assistant, it is easier to lookup the info needed to complete those parts on your own. I'm sure other tax prep software products are the same. There are also bugs in the software each year. For example, it could not e-file if QBI was applied under safe harbor. I had to wait for a fix before filing. It also flipped the minus sign when calculating estimated taxes, and thus erroneously reported estimated payments of zero. They are fairly quick about updating the software to fix bugs, but they do not take bug reports electronically from users. In this case, I just had to download and use the form on IRS.gov.
