The Federal software I found cumbersome but satisfactory in content. The state (NJ) software was not complete, e.g. medical expense on Federal was not transferred directly to the state and I was unable to use worksheet C effectively since I had multiple IRAs from which I had unrecovered contributions. I had to do it by hand and transfer o the software.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I've used this product for years... this year's product was disappointing. For whatever reason, I was unable to import ANY of my PDFs (although I could import my daughter's). The program told me for three weeks that I could not file my taxes because the program was "incomplete" and needed an update... for forms that I don't need to file anyway, as it turned out. And for some other unknown reason, the "Accuracy Check" showed errors in fields that when I went to the actual form, there were different numbers. Go figure. I don't think I will buy this next year.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

No everyone works in IT or spend their days on a computer. When your nerds design a product they should TEST it. The way you test it is not with the engineer who designed it but with a potential consumer like me. You could watch me as I try to enter your Activation code which has a DASH between the 10 characters but will not work if you put it in. Another thing. Not everyone has 20/15 eyesight. Will not cost you anything to increase the size of your lettering.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Time consuming

I bought this after many years of using TurboTax, due primarily because it still supported Win10 (for which TT dropped its support this year). It worked okay -- I was able to complete my taxes, although not without some frustration. Three things could use improvements:
1) UI comments: Text of the entire program is far too small on high DPI monitors. Please make it resizable and the windows scalable. Also, when using the Help window, moving the window to a different place on the screen should be remembered when reopening the window. Now it has to be moved EVERY SINGLE TIME.
2) Colorado state return allows a credit for long-term care insurance premiums, which the software noted. But this ONE item caused the program to refuse to file electronically with the state. Colorado DoR allows necessary attachments (proof of premiums paid) to be uploaded separately on their website (which I have done for years with TT easily). That one thing shouldn't prevent electronic filing -- there should be an override and notice about uploading/printing/mailing the necessary attachement.
3) Oil/gas bonus payments should be filed as RENT, not ROYALTIES. However, trying to do that results in questions about renting out my house so many days, personal use, etc. No provision for marking payments differently. I finally had to mark it as Royalties and hope it is accepted as such.

Truly terrible software. Looks like it hasn't been updated with a modern design in more than 20 years. Asks questions in an order that doesn't actually help you understand the tax process. The business software is especially bad at this. Looks and acts like software that was designed by accountants and sent to engineers with no Product, QA or UI/UX people involved at all. Software is incredibly unstable and slow.

I am greatly disappointed. I have used this program for many years and appreciate the ease of filling in my information and promptly e-filing. This year, however, their seems to be a glitch in the software edition and I have been unable to get it resolved. One of the forms necessary for my taxes prevents me from filing electronically - according to the program. I also helped a family member with their taxes. They didn't need the form that kept me from filing electronically, but their federal taxes would not file electronically either. The rejection said the "one-time" pin they were to select was wrong. The rejection notice directed them to the IRS website to request an IP Pin, which they did. The IP Pin could not used with the Tax Cut program as this program has no place for the IP Pin which is more digits than the PIN space. I buy this program EVERY year for the ease in preparing and submitting my taxes. The software is promoted with "5 Free E-Files". The program is non-refundable, which I understand, but not when the e-file feature isn't functioning. I would be happy to update this review if H&R Block works this out.
