as soon as I sat in an office chair on this mat the wheels indented the surface. I was unable to move my chair. not acceptable

It's thicker material and does seem to stronger than some of the lower cost versions. But I do see one issue after using it the past few days it does not stay in place as well as the versions with the tabs poking into the carpet (This version just has ribs on the back side). Hopefully it lasts a few years.

Works fine on our carpet lays flat and stays put

It's a good value compared to other chair mats of comparable thickness that our Staples store had in stock. With a 25%-off-chair-mats coupon it was under $40 delivered right to us. Unlike some carpet chair mats this uses a fine-ridged surface on the grip side and not a grid of little "darts" to stick into the carpet. I'm guessing on a hard floor you could use either side as the up side dunno. On a nicely finished wood floor I would try putting the smooth side down first and then see how well it works/stays.

This mat is perfect for my space where my desk is on top of an antique Persian carpet. I didn't want a mat with "teeth" gripping into it so this one with ridges to prevent slippage was a good alternative. Although I can't really see the carpet beneath me it is being protected and that is the trade-off.

The mat "gives" a little too much. If I sit in one place more than a couple of minutes my chair gets stuck and I have to pull myself out of the temporary crevasses.

Gets slight depressions

Material is good and holds up. I guess it's as rigid as it can be while still being rolled up for delivery. On a low to mid pile carpet it does get slight depressions that can be harder to move out of but you don't notice it.
