Does this mat even serve a functional purpose?

Staples makes much higher quality chair mats than this one so I'm not sure why it's for sale. It's basically barely a step up from placing a plastic bag on the carpet. A chair can't roll on it and makes indents because it's so soft. I returned this and got a much heavier mat which I'm very happy with.

The chair mat works fine lies well on my carpet and serves its purpose. I only wish it was wider - it replaces a mat that was wider by a foot. With my new mat my chair sometimes rolls off one of the edges.
