Good Budget Purchase

This serger is a good buy for the price I paid. I love the handle for the presser foot. Best thing about the whole machine. There are a few things that could be improved on however. Lint builds up very fast on the lower loopers and must be cleaned after every use. It is difficult to clean out underneath but if the whole end could be removed easily it would make it possible to get out lint that has traveled into the mechanics. The machine is quite noisy but it doesn't affect the beautiful stitch it makes. Also the tray that catches the "cut off" is rather flimsy and doesn't catch all the lint like it should. A swing out presser foot would make threading needles easier. I guess I'm spoiled as I have had a Serger for 28 years that had the swing out foot, heavy duty tray, and ability to open up the lower loopers for cleaning and oiling. But that machine is now deceased and the new 1034D is satisfactory as it is a price I can afford and it has been pretty easy to operate.

Good Machine

This is my first ever serger. I picked this machine based on the rating of others and cost. So far this is an excellent serger. My only word of caution is threading. I needed to re thread my serger. I thought that I had everything exactly as the directions in the manual showed. I had everything except where the tail for the lower looper spot on. As so many out there know- the devil is in the smallest details. That tiny error on my part kept my serger from making it's stitch correctly. In my defense I think that Brother could and should make a better diagram/picture of how each step should be. (Thankfully I have an amazing friend that set me straight.) So with the exception of how I feel about Brother's manual I feel that their serger earns 5 stars based on performance and cost.

This is my send 1034D serger. I still have my first one purchased 5 years ago. I have done periodic cleaning and oiling which and replacing the blades recently, and with that level of maintenance it has run well. I now sew much more often so I have a second machine I can use as a back up if my first one has a maintenance issue, and I have them both set up with different thread colors so I can easily switch from one to the other. So far, so good.

I've been wanting a serger for years. Got it for Christmas from hubby. I started with 12 napkins with rolled hems to get used to it. Went out and bought a drawer full of thread. Loved the DVDs and book. It sews like a dream and is the "work horse" of sergers. My daughter got one for her birthday also.
Bought a head light to see to thread lower looper. Also made a larger scrap catcher. Found a small plastic container for the supplies. I now have an idea for a cabinet to put it in.
