Tape adhesive failed once primer was applied

I used the green tape to mask 4 rooms in a house i had to paint the old classic the ceiling tiles from the 70’s. Two rooms i taped the ceiling trim first, then attached my plastic with another strip directly to the previous applied tape. The other two rooms i applied the tape and plastic sheeting directly to the trim, with only one layer of tape. I have used frog tape both the green and yellow for years even for this same application and never had trouble. This time it was a disaster. After applying the first coat on water based primer, when i went back to spray the second coat, 2 rooms had then plastic on the ground cuz the adhesive had apparently failed after being coated with primer. Keep in mind i made certain the tape was sealed to the trim securely the entire length of the trim, so there would be no bleed, since this was stained trim. I also had cleaned the trim before applying to get any dust off. Also, where the tape had failed to stay adhered, when attempting to put new tape, it would not stick at all to most of the surface of the trim. I had to use clear packing tape to stick the new protective plastic in place. I left the other walls that didn’t come off. So i proceeded to spray the second coat. As i was going the green tape started to fail on the walls that were still up after the initial failure, causing overspray to get on a lot of paneling and trim before I realized it had came loose behind me. As you can imagine, now i have a big mess to try and fix, and it wont be with this tape ever again, this much i promise, cuz it will cost a considerable amount of time and explanation to the owner as to why these issues exist, since they hired me so problems like this didn’t happen. After the second primer coat was dried, upon returning, almost all green tape and yellow tape I had used had failed and the wall plastic was on the ground when i returned. It made me sick to loose all that time and money in supplies, only to have to do it all again as well as remove primer from 50+ year old paneling and triim without ruining the finish. Good luck with that, so nothing i have to say is good after this experience. I have used frog tape for years and always recommended it. Never again they changed something in the adhesive and it is inferior to the previous product. And there is nothing anywhere to alert the consumers of a different product, same package same label. All in all, I lost week of labor and hundreds in supplies due to this mistake. At this point i will have to switch back to 3M, they stepped up their game the last few years after frog tape came along, so hopefully i can depend on their products being consistent in the future. The world we live in is so pathetic and greed stricken, if there is a product that actually works right or better than expected, never expect it to stay that way, cuz big business or big brother can’t have something that actually only requires one application, one usage, like it should. Instead they gotta change everything so they can increase sales volume after they “almost” get the job done, but still need more to finish it. Just like modern medicine. No cure, just monthly treatments and more meds to treat the side effects of the others. Pathetic. Never again for me, sorry for the long review, just highly frustrated.

Used Frogtape on my textured walls. Pressed firmly into crevices. Paint bleed all over. What a mess. I regret now choosing to paint a color instead of basic white again.

We are very sorry to hear that you have some paint bleed. Textured surfaces can be quite tricky. When cutting in, it is best to run a thin coat of your base color along the tape edge first. Doing so activates the PaintBlock Technology and also ensures any initial bleed through that may happen will be the same base color as your wall.

Ripped up paint

For a painters tape this is a terrible product. Used it to tape the corners and ceiling of an accent wall and it ripped a huge chunk of my ceiling paint off. Only left it for about 6 hours while I let the paint dry and peeled as carefully as possible but still ripped the paint off. Will never use this product again

Used FrogTape on my walls so I could paint baseboards, literally ripped the paint and gyproc in some place. I have used frogtape before, and had good results. Now we have a whole new expensive job of fixing the walls and painting…significant time and money. NOT IMPRESSED!!

I bought this and used to tape off trim. When I went to remove the tape it peeled off the paint from my walls and caused enough damage that now I will need to mud over to get a nice finish.

I used this instead of the blue tape because it supposed to be “better” than the blue tape. Wrong extremely upset after painting I go to rip off this green tape and there goes all the paint and dry wall. I will never buy this product again

AWFUL

We used this to strip wood without stripping our walls and then to varnish the wood we stripped. We got this tape specifically because of its reviews, however, it was a nightmare. The tape took off so much paint when we were stripping- not a flake or two, but many huge chunks. We are going to have to sand or plaster before we re paint. We already had the tape and that damage was already done so we figured why not, and went ahead with using it for the wood finish. It leaked everywhere, despite having spent so long pressing the tape into the walls trying to prevent more damage. At this point it feels like ripping out the wall would make less of a mess- any kind of tape would have done better than this and we are so deeply disappointed

What happened?

I'm an experienced DIYer and a borderline perfectionist. I used to cut in my trim by hand until I found Frog Tape. I've been using Frog Tape for over 10 years and enjoyed the clean, crisp lines it gave, until recently. For whatever reason, today's paints will bleed thru the edge of the tape even though I use a stiff toothbrush to press it down. I've tried washing the walls with TSP thinking a film was preventing adhesion, but that didn't help. Today's paints seem thicker, almost gelly-like. Not sure what's in them, but it doesn't seem compatible with the adhesive in Frog Tape. Now I have to cut in my trim and ceilings by hand and be annoyed by the lack of a clean, crisp line.
