I remember index cards as thicker than paper. These feel like 28 lb paper cut in to 3 x 5. Lots of kids (I bought as ha know to school special) get these cards for making flash cards except if you use a sharpie you can see right through to the other side. If all you need is slightly thicker 3 x 5 paper cards great if you need flash cards or cards that will stand up try something else. They were priced well at $.50. But if staples wants their loss leaders to get me to come back they should make sure to improve the quality.

Very sturdy. I use the ruled side for hand written items but I also use the side that is not ruled for printing from the computer. Very handy
