I use these bands as and when required to keep paper products together. I last purchased a package several years ago and found they lasted for several years before perishing / losing elasticity.

A rubber and for every use

The mission was to get some rubber bands for my husband probably 1/8 of an inch wide. At Staples I found a big full bag of rubber bands that had all assorted sizes and colors. My husband is doing a project of sorting and catagorizing baseball cards by player and team so I thought he could use the different colors to help identify teams. Also the extras he doesn't use that are smaller and larger thicker and thinner can be used around the house for all sorts of things. I use rubber bands for a variety of things around the house such as holding meal sized bags of microwaveable food closed a few days until I serve the rest with another meal. I hold boxes that tend to fall open closed with rubber ands I can't think of anything that can do that job better.
