Finally Kuerig has produced a coffee product that rivals brewed coffee. I love my machine, but it bothered me that the coffee products were the weakest part of the K-cup line. This is first and foremost a coffee maker, right? The Barista Prima Italian Roast is dark, bold and flavorful. I compared it to the new Starbucks cafe Verona line, and Barista Prima wins hands down if you like strong bold coffee.
If I wanted Dark roasted weak tasting Colombia coffee I would have ordered that. I only use the 5.25 oz cup setting …if I needed to use a 4 oz setting I would rather pull a shoot form my espresso machine… Their roster profile is misleading "This robust, heavy-bodied cup with its ripe fruit and berry notes" no where to be found… For me not worth the price..
Cons: Not Enough Flavor, Roasted Too Light, Unbalanced Or Sharp Acidity, Thin Or Watery Mouthfeel/Body, Unappealing Or Flat Aroma
I really liked this coffee when I had ordered it in the past, but it seems like something has changed--the beans, the roast, the quantity, or something. It's much more intense now, to the exclusion of the other qualities I remembered enjoying. The pleasant sweet dark chocolate notes are overwhelmed by bitterness. Or to put it in chocolatier's terms, it's gone from 60% cocoa to 90% cocoa. I think it's perfectly fine with food, especially sweet or buttery breakfast items, but it's a little much for me by itself. I do drink it black, however. Having said that: if you have a brewer with a travel mug size, you might want to experiment with that setting. It's obviously less bitter in the largest size, but I still think it's missing that slight sweetness I remember it having. And it's maybe a little flat-tasting that way, yet somehow I also think the aftertaste is more unpleasant. After tasting the two in short succession, I think I like the standard 9 oz. size better. Bottom line: I don't think it holds up next to some of the lower-priced, more widely available alternatives.
So far this has been the only flavor that I have not been able to finish--it's that bad. The taste is terrible but that's not even the worst part. The worst thing about it is the horrible aftertaste. No amount of mouthwash removes the aftertaste from your mouth. I liken it to consuming ashes from a fire. If you like your coffee to taste like a burnt mess then this is the one for you.
I really wanted to like this coffee. It keeps me up like nothing else, so if that is what you are after this may do it for you even though it is a dark roast. For me it does it even when I drink it only in the morning, so that's not a good thing. When I shake the k-cup I hear what sounds like an extra piece of plastic (or something) inside the cup [have not performed surgery to see what it is]...?
It was a good strong cup of coffee, but I don't think it should be priced any higher than other flavors of coffee. The flavor did leave a lingering aftertaste like licking a 9V battery. The bold taste of it all does make up for the aftertaste but the roast should be called wake up call or INSOMNIAC either or.
