Time to upgrade

My old PR4100 NAS was way past its prime and needed to be retired fast. I researched the QNAP TS-464 and decided it would suit my needs. I was amazed how fast my data (+/- 150GB) was copied from the old to the new NAS. (across a 1G connection) The ability to see the network traffic across the pair of NIC's that I used to connect to my router was a bonus. The QNAP Apps available both free and licensed opened up a new capability that I did not have on my old WD device. Money well spent and I am just getting started with my data safe on this QNAP machine.

This is a very well conceived piece of Hardware for a professional home NAS. It checks all of the boxes for a Home/Office NAS when paired with a cloud backup and snapshots.
I REALLY wish that it had more PCIe lanes available. It seems like a pump fake to have an expansion card with only two PCIe lanes and then sell cards that offer more SSD space and 10GigE NIC that need way more lanes to actually be a meaningful use of an add in card. The cards use a PCIe switch to share those two lanes to all the other devices. Don't try to use the NIC and the SSDs at the same time. I don't use the NIC (don't need it at home) and use it for a single small 500GB SSD for caching and an AI module for photo processing. In this configuration it's pretty useful.
The M.2 slots on the mobo are also limited to just two PCIe lanes. So, be sure to buy some older PCIe3.0 SSDs to save money. I have two 2TB SSDs in RAID10 for the system drive here and for daily workloads. Super FAST.
-1 STAR for the fact that QNAP still has not released QTS v5.2.2 as of this review despite having every reputable vlogger and their website pushing the value of bringing QuTS Hero to this little box. It's why I settled on QNAP instead of Synology at this price point. It's been a couple months folks. Don't advertise it until you're ready for launch next time please. I'll have to do a complete wipe and reprogram and reload of data when this finally launches. That's a week of transfer to and from different backups for redundancy.

Too Noisy - QNAP TS-464

Not very happy with it. It rattles and the fan is too noisy. I have an EX-4100 that I got a few years ago and I wanted to upgrade. The older EX-4100 is nice and quiet - stays in the living room, but it has older electronic guts. I had to put the QNAP TS-464 in another room where, fortunately I have a 2.5 gig connection, so performance doesn't suffer. Given the rattle and noise, I probably would not buy again.
