It's ok...

This lens is ok. It produces really sharp images and the auto-focus is average speed. What I don't like is, it is really cheaply made. When I got it, some of the metal around the lens was chipped, the plastic was faded, etc. If you are looking for a lens that performs well that is well priced, then I would get this lens. If you are willing to spend more, don't get it.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Super-sharp images
Cons: Poor build quality
I would recommend this to a friend!

I got this lens with my Rebel XS kit. I have only used it twice, due to my extreme dislike of it. When zoomed in, anything that's white gets a blue ora around it. Not something I would recommend to a friend.
Cons: Semi-sharp images, Slow auto-focus, noise, blue effect when zoomed in
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Out of the box, my focus ring sticks before getting to infinity when on autofocus. It canl not take a distant object in focus while set over 200mm on any setting. In over 100 attempts ZERO pictures are in focus. Even on landscape mode or manual with focus set on infinity and the Fstop raised to f16 are still blurry at 200mm - 300mm. This lens is simply no good.
Cons: Slow auto-focus, Semi-sharp images
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

While the build quality is pretty good, do not use this lens without a tripod! I have been overly disappointed every time I've used this lens without a tripod attached to the bum of my camera. I highly recommend using a tripod. Other than that, it's a good, cheap lens.
Pros: Fast auto-focus
Cons: Semi-sharp images
I would recommend this to a friend!

The worst autofocus lens ever manufactured

The only canon product i've ever been disappointed with. I've owned this lens for about 12 years now, it's about as sharp as a balloon. Soft focus galore on every single shot. When I sold my T3 (which this lens came with) I refused to sell this lens to the buyer, as this lens almost made me quit photography. I was convinced I didnt know what I was doing, however, when I purchased an L series lens suddenly my results became useable. I was able to definitively determine that this lens was the cause of my poorly focused images.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
