Ink cartridges empty without use!

Because my color cartridges were empty, I could not print with my black cartridge. So I needed to purchase and install new color cartridges. Since installing the color cartridges, I have only printed with the black cartridge, but the color cartridges are now at 70%. This is ridiculous. You have to spend money on color cartridges that empty themselves without use - if you don't, the black cartridge won't work!
